Okay so this is something I knew was going on but didn't really pay any attention to. Apparently, when people are trying to use the word "definitely" online, they are using the word "defiantly" instead.
I'm serious. Do a search on any social network or look for texts between friends... It is bad.

And the word "literally" now means both LITERAL and figuratively thanks to so many people using it out of context and the dictionary people caving in...

I agree, I think that people are stupid but poor spelling doesn't lend any credence to that theory (though it certainly doesn't help them).

Literacy rates are higher than they've ever been. The poor and multi-lingual just have a voice and more education now. Very few people have an editor for their internet posts, and almost every major publication you've ever read including recorded letters from a century ago has been vetted rigorously to reduce errors.

There are three primary types of typo, in my experience as a person who has made significant amounts of typos. One is just pressing the wrong button. Another is that the act of typing is in itself a muscle memory process, as sometimes I type a portion of a word or think of the correct word, but my muscle memory just auto-completes whatever I am typing to be another, similar word. The last is when actual auto-complete or auto-correct functions change the text for you because they're just so swell.

Words change over time though. Awful used to mean full of awe - like amazing. Pathetic used to mean full of feeling, but now means something weak. Decimate originally meant remove a tenth but now it means to totally remove. Naughty used to mean to have nothing but now means immoral. It's only natural that language changes. Just because literal is being used differently doesn't mean that people are getting stupid. It shows how creative we are with language and how fluid it is.
