Wow...it disturbed me watching that.

I was getting out of work late last night (maybe around midnight) and stopped at a gas station because I was low and there was a kid there sitting on the front area that I knew. We talked real quick and he tells me he got kicked out of his parents house (keep in mind he is 1 8) because he was smoking weed a couple weeks before getting caught. I guess he had been homeless for the last two months. It shocked me because I knew this kid as a healthy young kid who had just graduated from High School and now he seemed content with sleeping outside for the night (it was a rainy night last night). The kid looked like he desperately needed to be cleaned up and at the very least a shower. I decided to do a good deed and bring him to the boarding house which is usually a place for foreigners to stay when they work. I paid the 60 bucks to get him boarded up for the month and hopefully they will find him a job and clean him up to get him back into a normal society. There was no way in hell I was going to let him spend the night at my house nor let him sleep in the rain. I don't believe he was a druggie but was just caught smoking weed. Other than that he was a normal kid. He even won an engineering scholarship award last month.

I was thinking of going to the kid's parents but I ultimately ended up just staying out of it. Not my business but I think that kicking him out for getting caught with marijuana is wrong. What are your opinions?

You're a nice person. :)

The parents should've given him a second chance.

What good does it do to take everything away from a kid and throw him into the streets? If your kid has a problem that you don't like, don't ignore it. Solve it. I guess I can compare his pain to that of a puppy taken from it's mother too early.

Let's go into the realm of saying marijuana is an actual drug problem (i don't believe it is but the parents think otherwise apparently). If your kid has a drug problem and you kick him out of the house with nothing, then what little money he earns on the streets will go towards drugs as he will have a dependency upon it. That leaves no money for him to build on his life. Let's say his parents decided though instead to turn him over to a drug rehab program (i'm almost positive this kid would've preferred this than being kicked out of the house) that was affordable. He'd get cleaned up and they'd do what they could to get him functioning in normal society again.

That was wrong for the parents to do, and it was kind of you to find him somewhere to say.

This recently happened to one of the people I used to hang out with. He was caught with weed and his parents shipped him off to New Mexico to live with his grandparents. He also now has to work to pay a 10,000 dollar fine on his own because his parents and other family members won't even help him. I think this is as bad as kicking him out. Now they could be mean but still he's their kid.

Complete overreaction. His parents are absolutely ridiculous if they one, thought it would help, and two, thought that it was warranted in any way. This could potentially ruin the kid's life, over something as silly as that. If it was like cocaine or meth or a really bad alcohol problem then I could see a point, but that's insane.

A question could be asked about whether it was a one-time thing, or how valid his story is.

Regardless, you did a good thing.

10,000 dollar fine for possession? Geez...it's only 350 bucks and no criminal record in Maine.

Marijuana isn't chemically addictive. The parents could've "rehab'd" him for free by simply taking away his stash.

But I digress. You did a good thing, WVW.

Yeah, isn't Texas a great place?
He would have had a more harsh fine if they could find something else to pin on him.

That's why it was so high there was also on school property so that's a different charge. Then he said he didn't have any to a principle so that was another weird charge. And there was one more but I can't figure out what. I mean the last week of school we had a kid get busted with a violin case full and only get a week in ISS and a 1,000 dollar fine. I mean wth?!

Cool, I got a call as of 5 minutes ago from his parents criticizing me for helping him out. I guess he called his parents earlier and told them what I did. I threw back a few comments in a polite manner without any swearing and hung up on them. The phone was ringing shortly after but I decided not to answer again.

Uh, no.
Marijuana is addictive. Plain and simple.
Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users?

Well that sucks. I can't believe his parents didn't want him to get better at all and just made you a scapegoat to their problems. Sorry to hear it man. But don't let it take down your nice guys who help people sensors.

There's no way to understand the situation without knowing the full story. There will be a reason the parents kicked him out, "just" for smoking pot. Who knows, maybe he was stealing from them to pay for the habit? Regardless of the reason, that's their trouble for them to sort out, and as he is an adult, it's not totally unreasonable for them to make him leave home.

Good work on helping the kid as best you could, wvsw.
Nonsense, I have not yet begun to defile myself.

You can become addicted to the high, but not to the drug itself.

...If that made any sense.

^Right, there's no chemical dependency.
