Never read the book, but I saw the previous movie in the 90s. It turns out there have been several of these, and the newer ones are terrible. Par for the course. I thought the one I did see was okay.
To me, you are the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoon.

I never read the book, but I've seen this version & the 90s film version. This version is beautifully shot & I think better-acted than the 90s version, but the pace of the story (like the geography of the garden) makes no sense.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
