At Wal-Mart today a family came in with a little girl who was screaming non-stop. I could hear the little puke from the OTHER END OF THE STORE. It's a Super, by the way.
Did the parents say anything to her, or try to do anything? Nope. I think they eventually tried to shut her up by TAKING HER TO MCDONALDS, because their son was flailing a McD's cup around which he wasn't before, and the girl was actually quiet for a few minutes before she was screeching again.
She was also flailing her arms all over the place.
^ Do you want a QUIET house?
Crazy little thing called "Consideration for others".
Have any of you guys ever tried to shut up a kid yourself? It's not like you can just tell them to shut up and they'll do it. Yell at them and they'll get scared, and 50% of the time, they'll just cry because of that. Hit them and they'll scream in pain. How do you guys suggest going about it?
Let them cry and be scared. If they have the intelligence to prove their worth on this planet they'll figure out the connection between when you're nice to them and when they're quiet. And if they don't learn to behave, they'll still be throwing temper tantrums as adults. Better a little screaming and bawling now than an adult that doesn't have a clue how to control themself.
Sometimes they scream or cry because they didn't get the toy they want. Your options are to make them deal with it and teach them that's not how you get that toy, or get them the toy and teach them screaming and crying gets them what they want.

People need to practice birth control. :/ F*ck religious taboo, your god hates you anyways. They also need to stop beating around the bush about abortions.

Try it, see if it works.Bandersnatch wrote:I would just say a drawn out "STOP".
I didn't say get them what they want. That's the last thing you do. The thing is, the reason why kids scream is because the parents are trying to make the kids "deal with it", which is exactly why they're crying in the first place. You guys are b****ing about how the parents don't care for the kids because the let them whine and s***, yet CK just suggested doing the same thing these parents are doing, let them whine and deal with it. I smell a contradiction here...CodieKitty wrote:Sometimes they scream or cry because they didn't get the toy they want. Thank you, Sab, for your informed opinion on religion. It was very appropriate in this topic.
Auron, there's more than just yelling and hitting. There's also fake bribery and empty threats. And actual rewards and real punishment. And babysitters. And Ritalin. And condidtioned behavior. And...
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I wasn't bitching about religious people in general, it was more aimed towards the religions that're all, 'birth control is bad'.

^ Parents who DO use birth control can be just as bad....
Everyone has different theories on parenting, and unfortunately, its always impossible to determine what works best, because all children are different. Often times, I don't think it's the parents just don't care, it could just be that they were parented in the same manner.
While I can't say who is right, everyone brings up good points. Codie is right, you can't just give into them when they throw tantrums, however, you shouldn't let them carry on and disturb other people. It's a difficult balance. Sometimes you do have to threaten them with a grounding or punishment of some sort, and other times you might have to bribe them. But each child is different, so there is no absolute way of controlling children.
But, don't be too hard on all of them. We were all children once (and some of us here still act like children)...

I probably should have said I somehow had "at home" in mind when I said "deal with the screaming during crying". I guess it's because "at home" is where it starts. At the store? That's a toughy. If they're only crying, then I'd say make them deal with it. If they're screaming, I'd say take them out of the store, but you might be alone and have a cart full of groceries. Of course, if your kid wasn't noisy before, I don't see why they'd scream over "No". If they'd pull that stunt, they'd probably already be making noise when you got in the store. Eh, it's late, I'll get back to this in the morning.
As I've said before, I grew up across the street from a park. Kids scream while chasing each other, on the swings, coming down the slide, everything. It's one thing to laugh or go "wee!" like I used to do; it's another to be constantly screaming at the top of your lungs for no reason. Lunchtime is a real pain because the entire park becomes crawling with screaming kids.
I'll also bring up that "do not scream" isn't just a courtesy to others, it's a safety thing; I pay no attention to screams from the park because of kids who do it for the hell of it. Nobody on this street does. If a kid was being kidnapped, or raped, or something and was screaming for help, nobody would pay any attention to it. Boy who cried wolf style.

But not from people who never wanted kids, just to knock boots with everyone they met.
Anyways, to put rhyme and reason into my post from late last night, what we're referring to in this topic is kids who scream to be noisy, which nowadays is the vast majority of them.
If the parents gave a damn, they'd be catching the kid on this from the very first time they tried doing it. If the kid's grown up being taught it's okay to scream for no reason, of course yelling at them not's going to do anything.

It suddenly became child abuse to discipline your kid.
