The Game Awards, an annual celebration of video games, takes place this December, and the nominees have now been announced for the 2024 showcase.

In 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 III took home the highly coveted Game of the Year award. This year, the nominees for GOTY include Astro Bot, Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Astro Bot and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth received seven nominations each, leading the way. Sony was the most-nominated publisher overall, picking up 16 nominations, followed by Square Enix and Xbox with a dozen each and Sega with 11.

A global jury including more than 130 media publications and outlets voted to come up with the nominees this year.

Scroll through this gallery to see all the categories and nominees for this year's event, which takes place on Thursday, December 12.

Nominees to be announced December 2, 2024.
Just like The Golden Joystick Awards, plenty of snubs, but this time I at least agree with some. There's the inevitable Stellar Blade snub, yeah, but Dragon Age: Veilguard didn't get into GotY either, surprisingly.

I underscored my picks per category (skipped if I knew nothing about a category/didn't think any deserved it/didn't think the category should even exist). Share your own picks if you want.

Update: Winners were announced.

Stellar Blade was not only snubbed for a GotY nomination and several other categories, but lost the couple they felt obligated to include it in, as expected. Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero was robbed too, and Nintendo was pretty much entirely ignored, including Zelda. Wukong of course lost GotY too, but at least snagged a couple other categories.

Ridiculous results, but that's awards shows for ya.

...I generally don't care about lists like this, but they do give us an idea of what to play when we have the means. I've been planning on getting a new XBox sooner or later, and the likes of 'ReFantazio' and 'Hellblade II' and 'Indika' are among my silver bullets.

ReFantazio seems great aside from the story, can't say I care too much about the Hellblade series though. I'll give it credit where credit is due though, HB2 has some of the best graphics I've ever seen.

...of course, there's something to be said for patience, too. When 'Nikoderiko', 'Rainbow Cotton', and the new remaster of 'Lollipop Chainsaw' first came out, they required an XSX, but the XOne versions followed a couple months after.

'Sometimes if you stand on the shore long enough, the smelly waterlogged corpse you've been waiting for washes up right next to you.' I read that in a fortune cookie once, you know.

Sounds like a cookie you'd get with North Korean food rather than Chinese food lol.

I never got to play Lollipop Chainsaw originally, I'm looking forward to trying the remaster at some point. But I wonder why they'd staggered the release dates like that. Maybe some kind of attempt to nudge people to current-gen hardware? There's an awful lot of holdouts still satisfied with PS4/XBO, after all. Can't blame people, there's extremely few exclusives for the current generation so far, and what little there is mostly sucks. I don't think there will be any exclusives next-gen, aside from Nintendo of course.

It's a pretty wacky game. James Gunn and Suda51 are some strange bedfellows, no mistake.
