I always liked Beakman a whole lot better than Bill Nye. I hear Bill Nye is actually kind of a huge prick in real life--------------I've heard loads of stories where, like, a waitress or cashier happened to recognise him and told him how his show inspired them to work harder and apply themselves in school, and then he'll be all, "yeah, and look where you wound up!" What an ass-clown. Like he knows that waitress or cashier isn't in college or nursing school or something. Anyone in training to be a nurse is worth infinitely more to the world than some jerkoff self-styled Science Guy---------Bill Nye can screw off.

^ I am not surprised to hear that. He's not even a real scientist as far as I know, he just LARPs as one while doing his activism, and even censored some of his old episodes to better align with that. Supposedly he was also a jerk to his wife which is allegedly why his marriage ended in divorce, just seems like an overall terrible guy and I never hear anything good about him.

Gotta say though, his old show's opening theme is pretty catchy and memorable, I still remember it despite not hearing it since I was a kid.

It's a bop, no mistake.

'Beakman's World' theme is better, IMO.

It is, but it's a bit less memorable I think.

Well, sure. Like, I'd recognise the 'Beakman's World' theme, but I might not remember where I knew it from-----------whereas there's no mistaking the 'Bill Nye the Science Guy' theme, with all the idiot yelling of "BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL!"

Incredibly obnoxious. I've seen a lot of griefing videos online with people playing the "BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL!" thing over and over in the voice chat.

[EDIT:...I'll not lie, they're pretty funny.]

So what's your favourite Trek theme, gang?

Man. You know, I'm pretty sure I respect TOS and TNG about equally, they're both great shows with great casts, but I sure do love the TOS theme. It's so fun.

Hey, here's a gross fact--------------Gene Roddenberry was already a titanic dirtbag, but he made up and copyrighted lyrics to the TOS theme so he could claim a writing credit and thus earn a slimy tenth of a cent (or some such) every time it got played. Ugh, it's so sketch. He didn't compose it or have anything to do with it, he didn't deserve a red cent or a plug nickel (trust me-------------nobody'd buy them lyrics, absolute dogsh*t they are), he just wanted every dime he could hold in his filthy grimy little hands. Who does he think he is, Bob Kane?!?

So I really liked the goofy old cartoon show 'COPS' when I was a kid because it's good entertaining stuff for a kid. Nowadays I just really love that opening.

Actually, I have an actual important Trek theme song question.

Like, it pertains to one of my biggest gripes about DS9-------------it stopped being itself after S3. And I know some people preferred DS9 after S3, when it got stupid. And I'm not saying DS9 got worse after it got stupid; sometimes stupid Trek is good Trek. 'Wrath of Khan' is about a thousand times stupider than 'The Motion Picture', and it's a superior product (Motion Picture' was chasing '2001', but that's never been Trek's bag. We're here to see Kirk punch a Romulan and Spock banter with Bones and Scotty say weird things in a really fake Scottish accent; philosophy is accidental and incidental). I'm just saying...they made DS9 be a different thing than the other shows for reasons, and maybe it should have stayed true to itself.

So here's my gripe----------DS9 got way stupider starting with S4. They undid the alliance between the Federation and the Klingons after only about four years ('Undiscovered Country' was a great Trek flick, and it just came out in '91). Trek fans wanted the humies and space dorks to be at peace, dangit, and the creators couldn't leave well enough alone! Also they introduced the Warship Defiant. The Warship. Boy, that made me sad. I didn't want Starfleet operating warships, not in my Trek. This civilised perfected vision of 24th-century humanity needs to operate warships complete with cloaking devices, now, does it? After a hundred years of prickly peace with the Klingons, Romulans, and Andorians (among others), and at least peaceful overtures with all the horrifying entities in the galaxy, it's just time for warships, now? Fantastic.

You know, even stupid-ass Kirk didn't kill the Gorn captain after defeating him. He felt empathy for a fellow being. And so now we need warships with cloaking devices. Presumably so we can, from hiding, blow up the next equivalent of the Vulcans or Bajorans who just want to hang. Did humanity devolve between Kirk and Sisko?

This is not to say DS9 was worthless after S4 ('Little Green Men' is one of the best Trek episodes ever)------------just generally it was dumb and not as good.

Anyway, so there was the original theme, which had a certain understated majesty.
Spoiler.
And then the bombastic new post-S3 theme.
Spoiler.
What do you guys think?

One of the best TV themes ever. Man alive, the hook is good enough, but the two snaps are really what drives it home.

So here's a weird fact---------like, not only is John Astin the last living member of the 'Addams Family' cast, but he's also technically the last of the Batman villains from the 60s. Evidently there was a contract dispute that prevented Frank Gorshin from playing Riddler in one episode, so they got John Astin to fill in. That's wild. You'd think they'd just film it out of order until they had the legalities settled. Presumably they had a few scripts in the bag (probably a few in the garbage, and a few in the vault as well-----------just take some old mildewed unused Charlie Chan or Green Hornet script and change a few names around). But whatever. It's fun to see John Astin, who, even today, just looks like Gomez, wearing a Riddler suit.

^Hey, that's fun! I'm not a fan of 'Woody Woodpecker', but Kay Kyser was a real big deal, and man but Gloria Wood had a pretty voice. Sometimes it seems they just really lucked out and landed a megatalent, you know?

So, after that happy-go-lucky tune, I'm afraid I have to talk about 'GI JOE' music. Sorry, it's time.

So, there was the original theme song from the cartoon, and it was pretty rad.
Spoiler.
I'm well aware that the 'GI JOE' cartoon was dumb, believe me, I've heard every joke. That said...I don't know, man, I'm kind of on-board with that back in the 80s, when, after the recession during the Carter presidency, people thought the Soviets were gonna run the future. I was a stupid little kid, I didn't know nothin about that stuff, I just wanted to punch terrorists and shoot lazer phazer M16s.

Sergeant Slaughter was a guy in real life and also on 'GI JOE'. Even when I was a kid that was weird to me. It'd be like finding out Falkor was real.

So the big one for me is the opener from the movie. Great music, great action sequence. Like to see Carmen Sandiego piss about with Liberty if the flippin JOEs had been on hand. [EDIT: Gripe about the lyrics. Something I noticed instantly as a kid. "Crashing through the sky/Comes the fearful cry/Cobraaaaa!" 'Fearful' does not mean 'scary', it means 'scared'. Keep a dictionary on your desk, dinghus.
Spoiler.
That's cool.

Finally...there was the 90s take. It's totally different, and you know what? Rad. Don't care what anyone says. A slick new theme song does not in any way eradicate the original!
Spoiler.
Didn't bother with the live-action flicks. I knew they were going to be garbage anyway, but the new acronym has the words 'global', 'integrated' and 'joint-operating'. Yeah, because that's what Americans want in their stupid cartoon idiot army men---------'let's see what the french think of our battle-plan! oh, they're saying we're not allowed to fly through their airspace or manouver our ships through their waters! are you surprised? i'm surprised!'

I like Red Green.

'Red Green Show' always felt like a much more authentic iteration of the 'guys goofin around and bein stupid' iteration of comedy than anything Tim Allen ever did.
