Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
I still like 'Tromeo and Juliet' better because I'm dumb, but 'Rosaline' is close.
...I think I'm more likely to watch 'Poor Things' again than 'Oppenheimer'. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a better flick, just probably I liked it more.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
...about to get on the train home. Finished out the week with:
'Who Done It: The Clue Documentary'-------------really interesting, entertaining look into the making of the 1985 film and its subsequent impact. Loaded with interviews with the surviving cast and crew. Good watch, if the subject matter appeals.
'The Menu (2022)'--------------pretty good thriller. Interesting premise; kind of a 'Saw' flick without the gore, except better than that sounds.
'Trolls: Band Together'--------------...I like these movies, I don't care what anyone says.
'Wish'-------------Pretty weak. There were a couple good songs, but the villain stinks; probably the lamest villain Disney's had in ages. If the only interesting thing in your Disney movie is all the '100 Years of Disney' crapola, then you should probably shelve the project entirely.
'Jim Gaffigan: Dark Pale'--------------Funny stuff.

32) Harry & the Hendersons - C+. A strong cast & a strong costume carry a flimsy script with a message that falls apart the instant you consider the fact that bears exist in the same forest where Harry lives.
33) Amelia - C-. Dull, plodding, misses the point of its subject, & has a terrible score. Swank & Gere are good, though.
34) Aquaman & the Lost Kingdom - D+. A couple good scenes & a couple good leads, but overall boring & ugly. I did enjoy imagining Takahata101 saying "Orichalamalaos" over the actual dialogue repeatedly, though.
35) Renfield - B+. FINALLY a good one! Cage is awesome, Hoult is awesome, the story is good, it's visually hilarious, Awkwafina is ok.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^'Renfield' was so, so flippin good. Nick Cage gets the bennie of the doubt from now on until forever---------------'Renfield' and 'Raising Arizona' make up for all his sins. 'Wicker Man' is just funny now.

Saw Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It's a fine enough popcorn flick, mindless action. It would get a 7/10 from me if it wasn't for the deaf girl, I couldn't read the subtitles because of my poor vision so it was super annoying. Gotta drop it down to 6.5/10 for that.

36) Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - B. Some corniness, but still pretty funny. Worst part was the loud ghost screams.
37) Shaun of the Dead - A

39) The Great Gatsby (1974) - C-. A great cast is directed to completely misunderstand the source material.
40) Neptune's Daughter - C+. A pretty good Red Skelton movie hidden inside a pretty boring Esther Williams movie.
41) My Big Fat Greek Wedding - B
42) The Good Witch of Christmas - D. As in "Didn't finish".

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
I rewatched the MST3K episode of 'Sword and the Dragon'.
It's the same kind of thing as 'Jack Frost', with the beautiful cinematography and insane rambling Russo-Finnish folklore. It has some of the best jokes MST3K ever did, and one of my favourite host segments (the Ingmar Bergman Sven and Ole sketch). Good biz.
[EDIT: Man, the other host segments in 'Sword and the Dragon' are great, too. You got Crow's political satirical revue, which...man, my old scoutmaster listened to nothing but NPR, and "Supercalifragilisticexpiali-Wacky!' is a picture-perfect skewering of all that weak Mark Russell/Capitol Steps-ass humour. And then Gypsy doing her own version of that scene where Ilya's wife is singing and weaving Ilya the magic tablecloth full of food; Mike and the bots are being whimsical forest creatures, and at length Gypsy notices them frolicking around her and storms off angrily. "You guys are so weird!"

Do you not give F ratings? I could've sworn you have before.CaptHayfever wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 10:12 pm39) The Great Gatsby (1974) - C-. A great cast is directed to completely misunderstand the source material.

Where do you watch those episodes, a streaming service?Booyakasha wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 11:23 pmI watched the MST3K episode of 'Sword and the Dragon'.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Most of it's for free on YouTube. That's where I rewatched 'Sword and the Dragon'. Look it up-----------look up 'Jack Frost' next. Why not, it's free and fun.
There's like two or three episodes of MST3K that aren't on YouTube. Toho claims 'Godzilla Versus the Megalon', and Universal has 'Revenge of the Creature' on permanent snag. Not like they're doing anything cool with the Creature from the Black Lagoon, otherwise they wouldn't have sold it out to old-school SyFy, they're just bein sh*tbirds.
But yeah, call up the old episodes for free on the Moo, man. The old MST crew, they don't seem to care-----------even today they got the same old 'keep circulating the tapes' mindset. They're cool.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
^^I do give Fs. This one wasn't an F; there were some good elements.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
I dunno, man. If the movie sucks so bad that you give up halfway through, that sounds like an F to me. Maybe we just got different standards--------------I wouldn't feel comfortable grading 'Zootopia', I was asleep most of it.
Like, 'Velma' has positive attributes (the artwork and VA are absolutely fine), but I'd still give it an F. Possibly something worse? An X, or a Mister Yuck sticker? Maybe a bright red biohazard or radioactive sign, so future scientists would know to study it and prevent such calamaties from happening again?

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
I think you can rate something higher than F without finishing it, but what comes to mind is typically something much longer like a video game or book rather than a movie. There's lots of games I'd actually rate quite highly but probably didn't even get halfway through.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
...yeah, that's fair. I surely didn't finish 'Velma', nor wouldn't shy a gun to my head.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Tom Arnold was genuinely funny in it. The main reason we didn't finish was that my wife didn't want to; she got tired & went to bed halfway through, & then she didn't care about it anymore the next day.
43) The Skeleton Key - D+. Too many jump scares & scare chords, & a lot of self-contradiction in the plot.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Ah, I see.
Tom Arnold's a funny comic actor-------------really liked him in 'True Lies' (liked pretty much everyone in that, actually).
