With 'Sonic' riding high at the box office, Sega are looking to cash in on the swell of public goodwill towards their franchises, and Kolstad has been tapped to write a big-screen adaptation of the 90s beat-em-up.

'Streets Of Rage' was a side-scrolling beat-em-up for the Sega Genesis, with 2020's 'Streets Of Rage 4' selling over 2 million copies, showing that there is still life in the franchise.

The franchise is famous for its pick-up-and-play action, and 'Streets Of Rage 2' is available to Nintendo Switch online subscribers.

And yes, the gameplay and soundtrack are as good as you remember.

The film version will be produced by Escape Artists, the production company behind 'The Equaliser' films starring Denzel Washington as well as dj2 entertainment, who helped bring 'Sonic' to the big screen.

Films based on video games are seeing something of a boom in the wake of the success of 'Sonic' and 'Uncharted', with big-budget versions of 'Ghost Of Tsuhima' and 'Minecraft' also in the works.

Kolstad has also been tapped to write a film version of the 'Just Cause' games, with Jason Momoa lined up to star.

'John Wick' director Chad Stahelski will direct 'Ghost Of Tsuhima' film, while the fourth entry in the beloved Keanu Reeves franchise is penciled in for a March 2023 release.

dj2 entertainment are also bringing one of the best games of 2021, 'It Takes Two' to the big screen.

As for 'Streets Of Rage', no firm release date or casting news as of yet, but if it's anywhere as good as the games, we can expect to be punching dustbins to replenish our health in the near future.

With action man Derek Kolstad on board, we're in for a good time.
Looks like Sega liked that Sonic movie money (Sonic 2 is the highest grossing video game movie of all time). This sounds like a great idea, if they can make it feel like a 90's action movie. It's going to be hard to screw this up.

I'd like to see other Sega movies, Golden Axe could be great. Any other ideas?

I didn't realize the latest version sold a couple million copies. I remember this being one of Sega's biggest franchises in the 90s, but then they left it for dead for about 25 years, not the only time they've done that. I can't say I remember much about the games other than that they were good fighting games that Yuzo Koshiro did the music for, and at the time I knew him from ActRaiser. I definitely played the second one, not sure about the other two.
To me, you are the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoon.
