I actually haven't seen Evangelion at all. I really should, I think I'd like it a lot.

I REALLY need to finish Escaflowne first. I absolutely **** adored everything about that show I just didn't finish it for some reason.

I know nothing about Escaflowne aside from its really unique name. Is that another mech one? Japan loves them some mechs.

Escaflowne is as far as I know the only other addition to Rayearth's genre of "isekai shoujo mecha". Hitomi doesn't pilot the mech but her love interests sure do (versus in Rayearth the magical girl knight protags do pilot the mechs and it's awesome).

I love it a lot because it uses tarot and fortune telling as a core concept in a really cool and interesting way. Also has one of those gorgeous 90's orchestral OSTs and an OP sung by Maaya Sakamoto, so really can't go wrong.

Should probably actually finish it tho lol

Okay. I literally just finished watching End of Evangelion and think I know what happened:
Spoiler.

Long story short: Everyone merged into one being, Lilith, the true form of humanity that grew out of her. But then Shinji wanted to feel like an individual again, and so he broke free, which caused Lilith to collapse and revert everyone back to separate souls.

Shinji obviously has depression/anxiety and cannot deal with people because of these "walls" we have as individual experience. So now that humanity has become a single entity, Shinji faces his innermost desires and secrets. He hates Asuka because he can't understand her and she forces him to understand people all the time, so he has this intrusive thought to murder her and starts chokes her.

In the end, once humanity has become whole, Shinji realizes that he misses the old form of humanity as separate entities. He believes he can overcome the anxiety of not knowing another person's thoughts and feelings, because he misses the paradoxical feeling of being whole with them while also being an individual. That's why sex is so often referenced. Sex is an experience that is both the joyous individual desire of wanting someone while also feeling whole with them. But Seele wanted to make humanity whole again because there would be no conflict or suffering. But at the same time, that's forcing people to become a utopia rather than through their own free will. Shinji chooses to accept humans as separate entities with free will, and breaks free of the entity. Before doing so, he explicitly states he can deal with others now.

So Lilith falls apart as all the human souls become separate again. Shinji and Asuka appear on the ruins of a beach with the remains of the angels and the entity around them.

Shinji then looks at Asuka and starts choking her. But then he stops and cries. Asuka just says, "Disgusting."

He had looked at her and reverted back to his negative feelings about her like what he experienced when he was inside the entity. At the same time, he didn't go through with it, and also Asuka has a rather typical Asuka response as if just shrugging off the fact that he tried to choke her. So on one hand, there doesn't seem to be hope for Shinji, but I guess the question is, is there then no hope for humanity then?

Watched the first 2 eps of Escaflowne. I realized the whole series is literally only 26 episodes which is shorter than Rayearth S2 so it's really not a significant commitment to just rewatch from the start.

I probably shouldn't have started rewatching immediately after Rayearth bc now I'm just comparing instead of enjoying. Anyway we gotta get through Van's tragic protag backstory and **** but pretty sure the good stuff starts up pretty soon. First you burn down protag's hometown, THEN everything picks up. Standard tbh.

The soundtrack is so weird like there are some phenomenal pieces and some good mood tracks and then you have those 3 tracks that are just choirs singing ESCAFLOWNE ESCAFLOWNE ESCAFLOWNE dramatically. This anime is a trip

I gave DB Super another chance. It's real dumb.

I might watch Avatar, though.

I haven't carried on to a new anime since watching End of Evangelion. I feel like that sucked me dry of anime for a good month. I'm still thinking about it. Every time I turn on Netflix/Amazon Prime I think, "I think I feel like watching some anime---ahh, no I don't. No. I'm still feeling the existential dread."

I try real hard to keep my ratings on MAL from getting inflated. I rate truly average shows as a 5.

I started watching Ranma 1/2. Dubbed, because my laziness compels me to prefer anything dubbed as long as the voice acting is a 5/10 in quality and this is a solid 6.5.

Very nipple-y show so far. I had no idea there was going to be a giant panda. I've heard that the overarching plot doesn't really go anywhere, but I'm only eight episodes in so far.

^Still, you gotta admit, that theme song is super fun and energetic. That right there is a good, fun anime opening.

Ranma 1/2 is just extremely fun to watch, and the openings/endings are all great. The plot is pretty weak but I didn't mind.

I was thinking about watching Ranma 1/2 recently. I dunno why it recently like resurged in specific niche weeb circles but it's got me curious. I might dive in soon.

Really want to actually finish Escaflowne first tho lmao

It is probably getting a resurgence in popularity because the author is continuing Inuyasha again, so her other older works might be of interest to people looking into that.

...I'm a **** idiot. The Inuyasha writer wrote Ranma 1/2? How did I not realize that?
