The Good Liar is a bad movie. It was so predictable I convinced myself there had to be a twist in there somewhere. Also a lot of forced diversity, why not. Good actors performing badly is interesting in a strange way, though, I'll give it that.

37) Genocide - D+
38) Rattlers - D+. The complete release list of Cinematic Titanic concludes with possibly the single most chauvinistic film I've ever seen.
39) Shazam! - A-. This movie got screwed at the box office; it was delightful!
40) Jay & Silent Bob Reboot - A-. I saw this in the Fathom Event showing last year too, but somehow forgot to list it. This is Askewniverse: Endgame. It's magnificent.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^I didn't realize Jay & Silent Bob Reboot already exists.

7) I watched Joker...sort of. I watched it with captions and no sound, so I didn't get the full experience. I hesitate to grade it until I do.
8) Inside Out was really touching. I also thought its representation of memories, the emotions associated with them, and their relation to the sense of who we are was brilliant.

^ The sound design adds so much to Joker. Obviously sound matters to most film, but this one especially so.

9) Caught Shazam! on the plane ride home. I laughed pretty hard at a few of the gags. The turning point of the last fight managed to surprise me. The Billy actor reminded me of Maisie Williams.

41) Like Crazy - C-. Jones & Yelchin give a craptastic, insulting plot way more effort than it deserves.
42) Apollo 11: First Steps Editions - B+. I was enthralled, but there's no getting around the fact that it's all archive footage, but it's really cool archive footage.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Wow. I'm really late in starting this. Instead of giving an alphabetical rating, I'll just give a brief opinion.

1. Frozen II - garbage. Hated it. First movie I saw this year and that's what we're going with? WEAKSAUCE.

2. Parasite - holy F*****************!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Craziest movie I have seen in a long time

3. Patriot Games - I've seen it several times and wanted my girlfriend to watch it since she's into the Jack Ryan show but didn't know they did movies before. It was better for some reason the first few times I saw it. This time felt more average. I can't get over the fact that there's a scene that sounds hilarious out of context. Harrison Ford says "Tits" so dramatically.

4. Contagion - ahahahah I wanted to rewatch this because coronavirus. I felt more nervous the first couple times I watched it. This time I found myself asking more questions about the plot of some characters, which I find is really secondary in the movie. The primary thing the movie wants to "get right" is what would happen if the next big serious virus spreads.

5. Sonic the Hedgehog - welp, here it is folks. And I liked it. It felt similar to Detective Pikachu in the sense that it got the world right and the vibe right and all that, but the story lacked some sense and impact. Still looking forward to what they do next! Definitely above average video game movie.

Rewatches have asterisks.

1. Frozen II (Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee, 2019) - 1/2 - B
2. Uncut Gems (Josh & Benny Safdie, 2019) - 1/7 - A
3. You're Next (Adam Wingard, 2011) - 1/11 - B-
4. Arrietty* (Hiromasa Yonebayashi, 2010) - 1/12 - B+
5. Anastasia* (Don Bluth & Gary Goldman. 1997) - 1/12 - B
6. The Room* (Tommy Wiseau, 2003) - 1/12 - A+
7. Bad Boys for Life (Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, 2020) - 1/18 - B-
8. Tremors* (Ron Underwood, 1990) - 2/1 - A+
9. Shrek* (Andrew Adamson & Vicky Jenson, 2001) - 2/2 - B
10. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (Cathy Yan, 2020) - 2/6 - B+
11. Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019) - 2/9 - B+
12. Toy Story 4 (Josh Cooley, 2019) - 2/10 - B+
13. Tremors* (Ron Underwood, 1990) - 2/11 - A+
14. Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory* (Mel Stuart, 1971) - 2/11 - B
15. Blade Runner: The Final Cut (Ridley Scott, 1982) - 2/12 - A-
16. The Little Hours (Jeff Baena, 2017) - 2/14 - D+
17. Sonic the Hedgehog (Jeff Fowler, 2020) - 2/14 - C+
18. Kingpin (Peter & Bobby Farrelly, 1996) - 2/19 - B
19. Raising Arizona (Joel Coen, 1997) - 3/6 - A-

I liked Blade Runner on this rewatch more than I've liked it in the past. Definitely vibed with its deliberate pacing a lot more. I still think 2049 is an improvement on it in most ways but this still rules.

The Little Hours is a one-joke movie that wastes a really talented cast. What if nuns and priests were DIRTY and SAID SWEARS and HAD SEX!? Blah. You brought out Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci, Molly Shannon and John C. Reilly for this ********?

Sonic is a perfectly fine movie. It's like the definition of "fun movie that I'd watch with my nephews and not get mad." The kids in my theater ****ing lost their minds for it. It's very okay, which automatically makes it a top 5 video game movie of all time.

Kingpin, co-directed by the director of 2019 Best Picture Green Book, is a perfectly fine Farrelly Bros. comedy. I'd never seen it before, but it's a nice background comedy.

Somehow I've never seen Raising Arizona despite being a fan of the Coens and obviously Nicolas Cage. It's not my favorite Cage performance nor my favorite Coen movie, but it's still a delight. Just a nice wacky crime comedy with a great cast.

10) I liked Onward a lot. Kinda put me in a mood to play some fantasy adventure game. Probably would be D&D specifically if I had ever played it. The characters are really endearing and sympathetic.

43) Stargirl - B. Charming performances & a faithful adaptation of a great novel overcome some annoying cinematography/choreography choices & the sacrifice of one of the most interesting supporting characters.
44) Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made - A-. "Mistake" #1: They had Pastis write the screenplay of his own book, so all of the humor & wordplay remains intact. "Mistake" #2: The kid they cast in the lead was perfect. "Mistake" #3: Wallace Shawn gets to tilt his head downward for a change.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

6. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) - 3/5

Cute movie. It was much better than I expected, but it was still extremely basic. I really liked the Green Hill Zone theme piano arrangement.

7. Charlies's Angels (2000) - 3/5

Boring story: when I was hanging out with my cousin years and years ago, we bought a copy of the sequel out of the bargain bin at Walmart without having ever seen the original. I don't remember much about that movie other than a running gag about Lucy Liu's dad thinking she's a prostitute.

Since then, I've always wanted to watch the first one and I finally did it! My verdict: it was okay. Very goofy, but an entertaining watch. I'm sure it's the kind of movie I would have rented over and over from the video store as a kid. Hoping to rewatch the sequel and watch the reboot(?) soon.

^It's really very enjoyable. Even Tom Green comes across well in it, & he's normally just the worst.

Yes! I was struck by how... not wholly off-putting he was. I had no idea he was in the movie prior to starting it.

46) Tangled - B+
47) Begin Again - A-. Honestly rather charming, despite the casting of Adam Levine as anyone other than himself. John Carney definitely has a storytelling "type", though, for sure.
48) What If (2013) - A
49) A Bug's Life - B+
50) Frozen II - B

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

12) The Platform was an interesting watch. I'm not sure the metaphor is saying anything about capitalism that isn't obvious, and the message of the ending isn't especially clear to me, but I did think the characters were worth watching.

51) A New Hope (Disney+ edition) - A. Han shoots simultaneously.
52) The Empire Strikes Back (2004 edition) - A.
53) Return of the Jedi (1997 edition) - A-.
54) Head - A+.
55) The Little Mermaid - B+.

Here's the thing about The Little Mermaid: Yes, Ariel is a complete dope; there is no way around that. (And so is Eric, who can't seem to put together the concept of somebody having lost their voice, even just medically rather than magically.) But all the Ursula apologists on Tumblr can stuff it; the sea witch commits breach-of-contract twice before attempting to claim victory. If Ariel had gotten to speak to her father for 10 seconds before he was coerced into trading places with her, he would've found out the crap Ursula pulled & probably would've just blasted her instead of the contract.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
