Who will win the streaming wars?

#1

Post by VG_Addict » Tue Nov 26, 2019 7:56 pm

Disney+ launched this month, and soon, HBO Max will enter the streaming race.

Between Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max, who will win the streaming wars?

Netflix isn't going anywhere unless they make some ironic Blockbuster level mistakes. They're all going to co-exist but if I had to guess which will drop first I'd say Disney+.

My guess for HBO Max is that the vast majority of their subscribers will be people who already had HBO in the first place.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Eventually, people will come up with streaming packages that bundle them all together to varying degrees and varying combinations. I should make a movie about it starring Matthew Broderick and Jim Carrey. I’ll call it “The Streaming Guy.”

^So, the a-la-carte cable system that everybody has begged for since the 90s?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

The topic didn't specify film, though that's clearly what the topic is about, but I do wonder when or if Nintendo will have a proper service to compete with Sony & Microsoft. Maybe the Switch's successor?

Nothing came out of it, but "GamePass on Switch" WAS one of the prominent rumors coming into E3 this year.

I cannot possibly see Nintendo being that savvy. Either they won't do it at all, or they'll attempt to do it with a "Nintendo-like Solution" that makes it unusable.

One could technically argue something for the "animation" bit fitting, especially for certain genres--FMV games certainly blur the line, haha.

^ HBO GO is what you get through your standard cable subscription to HBO. HBO NOW is the a la carte streaming service that you don't need a cable subscription for. They're essentially the same otherwise.
