I just watched 'The Last Jedi', what with it being Life Day and all.

...I didn't like it very much. Bigtime letdown after TFA. Like, I don't know but I'm going to watch Ep 9 at all.

Star Wars needs a good solid kick in the ass. It needs an 'Into the Spider-Verse', man, and also a 'Venom'. Some fun movies. Remember when Star Wars was fun? I do, barely (it kind of petered out after 'The Ewoks: Battle for Endor', but it was going strong up to then).

26) Nutcracker & the Four Realms - C-. A boring film saved solely by Keira Knightly's bizarre & enthralling performance, & that's a phrase I never thought I'd type. (Her first two big roles being anyone-besides-Obi-Wan in a Star Wars prequel & an underwritten Pirates character did her a massive disservice.)
27) A Star is Born (2018) - A-. Thank goodness they didn't do the walk-into-the-ocean from the old versions. Look, it's the 4th iteration of this exact same story, so the only question is whether the actors carry it well, & they very much do.
28) Christopher Robin - A-. Honestly, my biggest complaint is that we can barely see Pooh's mouth move when he smiles. Other than that, this is a deft handling of the characters & themes.
29) Unicorn Store - B+. It's Larson's directorial debut, so her shaky handling of the technical design aspects is understandable. Otherwise, great if you like whimsy. And I love whimsy.

6) Avengers Endgame was really good. Really liked the payoff for the Iron Man story arc. It's so impressive that they're able to manage the scale of this franchise and have it all be emotionally satisfying.
7) Detective Pikachu was about all I wanted out of it. Ryan Reynolds is Ryan Reynolds, and I was amused by most of the ways they used Pokemon in the world.
8) Missing Link was kinda forgettable. Smallfoot did something pretty similar better recently.

The first [i}John Wick[/i] is still incredible. I ended up watching the first Austin Powers movies within days of each other by accident. They hold up surprisingly well. Someone Great is a really good RomCom, especially by "straight-to-Netflix" standards. Gamer is honestly great. It's silly fun and I think it holds up better than Neveldine/Taylor's Crank movies (though that's probably a hot take). The Dirt is a really bad biopic for Motley Crue. It's got major tonal issues, an awful cast, and really has no point to it. Season of the Witch is very disappointing considering it's NIc Cage, Ron Perlman and Christopher Lee doing a silly fantasy movie. The last movie is an okay music doc about Robert Johnson from Netflix's ReMastered series. It's fine and they've got some big names involved but it really doesn't tell the average music fan much more about Robert Johnson than they'll already know.

Just felt... unnecessary.

Blue Ruin - 8/10
A pretty solid and engaging revenge flick.

Green Book - 7/10
Not quite as profound as it thinks it is, and definitely not Best Picture worthy, but a wholesome story nonetheless.

The Belko Experiment - 7/10
Good bloody chaotic fun.

Alita: Battle Angel -8/10
I'm not familiar with the source material but I enjoyed the cyberpunk visuals and the action was top notch. Alita's eyes didn't bother me at all.

Hereditary - 6/10
Some plot points were a little over the top and took me out of it, and the twist was... odd.

The Descent - 6/10
Funny enough I liked the whole spelunking and survival bits better than the monster parts (which weren't scary at all to me). Would've been cooler if they kept it to a psychological thriller with the characters turning on each other and such.

The Witch - 5/10
I don't know, I didn't find it scary, and the historically accurate dialects were hard for me to follow.

Mother! - ?/10
I guess it made sense when I realized it was all a biblical allegory but... man did I have no idea what was going on.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - 9/10
Felt slightly anticlimactic and the villain was a bit underwhelming, but as far as Hiccup and Toothless' story and relationship goes, it wrapped things up perfectly.

Us - 8/10
Not as scary as I would've liked it to be but the actors did a great job at making the Tethered feel otherworldly and creepy, particularly Lupita Nyong'o. And that freaking I Got 5 on It remix...

Hellboy (2004) - 8/10
Hellboy II: The Golden Army - 8/10
I was gonna go see the newer one in theaters but my mom convinced me to just watch the old ones with her. A good decision, I'd say.

Pet Sematary - 4/10
Incredibly predictable and not very scary. I did like the bleak ending though, which I think most horror movies should have.

Eighth Grade - 9/10
Well now I feel old. Really shows how kids' lives are far different even from when I was in school less than a decade ago. Social media is scary, yo.

Avengers Endgame - 9/10
It wasn't quite as good as Infinity War in my opinion, but you really couldn't ask for a better conclusion to the Infinity Saga and certain character arcs. I also love how many expectations they subverted. There's so many plot points that if you had spoiled for people it would've just sounded like you were trolling them.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum - 9/10
God these movies are freakin' fun as heck. There might have been a few moments where the action was dragging on a bit too long but man is it as entertaining and creative as ever. He kills a guy with a horse. No not on a horse. WITH a horse.

Brightburn - 6/10
I was pretty excited for this one because the whole "kid with power goes on a rampage" trope is really cool to me for some reason (Akira, Chronicle, the Genocide Run of Undertale...). What I got was... pretty disappointing. There's no build up or anything, there's no inner conflict, there's not even much environmental reasons for the kid to start lashing out, he just... does, because voices in his head or something. There's a part where he tells his mom that he wants to do good and I was sitting there wondering when he had ever showed that desire at any point in the movie. I guess the only part I did like was the violence and effects. It really showed just what a superhero would do to us human meatbags if they were real.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 6/10
There were a few cool parts, but overall it was kinda... meh. Giant monsters fighting is cool and all, but when a movie is just constant action and destruction, it gets boring fast. When chaos is the normal, you don't have the contrast to give moments real impact, especially when the action as all up in your face and you can't even get a good view of the fighting. Plus, you can't just have characters fight, you gotta give me reasons to root for them. Make me care. I see a lot of people online saying "Oh critics say this movie has too much monsters fighting so it must be PERFECT". I'm not a longtime Godzilla fan, but a movie can't rely solely on fanservice. Maybe that was enough for some people but it didn't do it for me.

I re-watched the Teen Titans Go! movie.

The thing about this movie is that it has absolutely stunning visual palettes and you can tell the animators had a ton of fun and creative liberty. It’s one of the most visually interesting animated movies I’ve seen in a long time. Plus the soundtrack is honestly fantastic - I’ve been listening to it on repeat, it’s so stupid and incredible at the same time. It’s a really fun movie. It suffers from wearing the skin of a dark 2003 animated drama in the tone of a slapstick caricature comedy and I still don’t know how I feel about that, but on the other hand seeing Teen Titans on the big screen in 2018 was such a weird and nostalgic feeling that I can’t be that mad about it.

I honestly like this movie way more than I have any right to. I have to just separate it from the original series in my brain because at this point the Go “characters” are... well I can’t honestly take them seriously as characters so much as memey meta jokes BASED on characters..... but while it just makes me wistful about how good the first series was, on the other hand the first series would never have succeeded with the absurd presentation of this movie, so I don’t really know where I’m at here.

Anyway I think I love this movie but at the same time Go! in general inhabits this uncanny valley of discomfort and I still can’t entirely put that aside. But honestly this movie is kind of great.

34) The Worst Witch - Mostly B-, but "Anything Can Happen on Halloween" gets an A++.

36) The Westing Game - C+. Ray Walston & the kid playing Turtle were excellent, but a lot of the supporting characters were phoning it in. They also failed to build up Turtle & Sandy's friendship at all, which kinda gutted the significance of the ending.

...I hated 'Toy Story 3' far too much to bother with the fourth. First one was fine. Second one was okay. Number three was garbo-town.

Maybe I'll offer to take the kids to 'Toy Movie 4', like, in order to give Mom and Sis a break. That'd be a good avuncular move, even if the very thought of paying lots and lots of money for the dubious privilege of taking three kids to it in-theatre makes me want to puke myself hollow.

decided to start watching movies again. prolly won't make it to 88 tho. listing and mini-reviewing a few of these to catch up

1. True Romance - 4 out of 5
It's kind of weird hearing Tarantino's dialogue in a film that wasn't directed by him. Patricia Arquette's character was kind of weakly developed and the music cues sometimes feel awkward. Good plot and action overall though, and the film's quite packed with stars for such a relatively low profile picture.

2. The Truman Show - 5 out of 5
Takes a great premise and really runs with it. Pacing is perfectly taut; every minute is engrossing. Jim Carrey's acting is incredible here.

3. Last Flag Flying - 4 out of 5
Decent little road flick that's simultaneously heavy and subtle. Richard Linklater excels at this kind of thing, but his dialogue here feels like a notch below his best, though it may improve with repeated viewings. Bryan Cranston chews the hell out of some scenery but isn't unbearably obnoxious. Steve Carell's performance is maybe a bit too understated, or maybe his character isn't given a whole lot to do, but he has some really good emotional moments.

4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – 4 out of 5
There’s nothing cohesive here, it honestly feels like Tarantino wanted to make two movies at once. DiCaprio’s character’s arc seems like it’s basically resolved about halfway thru the movie and ultimately feels inconsequential. The climax made me a little uncomfortable, it just plays weird tonally. Nonetheless it’s beautifully shot and very, very fun to watch for most of its running time.

5. Network – 5 out of 5
About as cynical as a movie gets, but William Holden’s character saves it from total bleakness. Sly and amusing, but not exactly a comedy; it’s more surreal drama than anything. The dialogue, characters and acting are all top notch.

6. Rambo: First Blood Part 2 – 1 out of 5
Commits the sin of being a dumb action movie where the action also sucks. Just really ineptly directed action sequences compared to its predecessor and contemporaries. You see a gun fire and then it cuts to a helicopter exploding with no real visceral connection between the two shots. It’s just that same kind of shot over and over again. It’s paced weirdly and you never feel suspense or excitement. Beyond that the plot is laughably stupid and the characterization is nonexistent. A pitiful sequel to the very good First Blood.
