Been watching Family Guy (you'd think they'd mock Muhammad and Muslims once after decades of going after Jesus and Christians, but they got no nuts) but an acquaintance insists that I give Hunter x Hunter another shot. It is by the guy who did Yu Yu Hakusho so it should be good but half a dozen episodes in I was still bored. I kinda just hate story heavy media about little kids, with very few exceptions like Dragon Ball. He says it starts slow, and that is for damn sure.

FDSLJKFJLSLFJDJLKFJSJFDDFKS Y'ALL
Twitter informed me today that there was a One Piece OVA animated by Production I.G. that came out before Toei's serialization. There was a clip posted and the way Luffy was animated just...... he actually looked and acted like a man made out of rubber, it was communicated so WELL visually in a way that the series has never been able to capture that well. I was able to find a totally legal source to purchase and legally view this old OVA, and watched the whole thing.
It was just over the length of a standard episode, like 30 minutes, but I was so blown away! It just felt so.... fresh. It was weird hearing different voice actors and just seeing how the characters were interpreted slightly differently from the same source material. The animation was the best thing: Luffy was animated in such a fresh and charming way it made me fall in love with the series all over again. The soundtrack felt SO different from Toei's (I love Toei's too, but this **** had some WILD fiddle and sax solos) and it just.... oh my god it just made me wish we could see this much life breathed into the series now. We just have these 30 minutes and that's it.
The story is fine, pretty standard One Piece stuff, but it did a great job of communicating character dynamics and everything and important themes in such a short time. A fantastic advertisement of the manga and a great introduction. Every single episode of One Piece I'm gonna watch and think about what could've been, though.
I know a serialized weekly anime is different from a one-off OVA but this is just another example of why the weekly episode formula is ****. But it makes them so much money they'll never stop. BUT THINGS JUST LOOK SO MUCH BETTER WHEN ANIMATORS HAVE TIME TO ANIMATE!!!! That aside, though, there are inherent things about how the manga was interpreted that came through differently, and just overall this version felt more charming to me.
Sigh

Been rewatching 'Archer'. Man, what a great series.
Haven't seen a new ep since S5E1.
(Aside from S8E7, of course.)

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
I watched the 90's SMB movie for the first time since I was REALLY young. All I remembered about it was that I was hoping it would be a movie somewhat resembling the games, and that it definitely was not, and I was really disappointed and confused, and that there was a part at the beginning where one dinosaur goes "you know it just don't get no better'n dis" and another dinosaur goes "yeah". All the discourse about Sonic and Detective Pikachu made me want to re-watch it out of sheer curiosity.
I am so glad I did. That movie is WILD. I had no idea Aunt Petunia's actress was in it but I lost my **** when I saw her. It was just completely ridiculous from start to finish; virtually every costuming choice in the ~*~reptile world~*~ is magnificent. Also.... yes that is definitely exactly how evolution works. I can only imagine biologists and/or paleontologists watching this movie and dying inside.
THE GOOMBAS ARE THE MOST LEGENDARY DESIGN CHOICE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY BTW. I DON'T KNOW WHY THAT ONE HAS A HARMONICA BUT I DON'T QUESTION THESE THINGS
It came out the same year as Jurassic Park so I wonder if everyone was just really ****ing into dinosaurs then??? or what. Anyway it was a ride. I honestly wish people would stop comparing Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog to it (I too was guilty of this) because there is no way either of those will be this **** great. 100000/10

I think Harmonica Goomba was supposed to be the de-evolved version of Guitar-playing Toad, wasn't he? like they let him keep a consolation instrument :DApollo the Just wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2019 5:14 pmI watched the 90's SMB movie for the first time since I was REALLY young. anyways yeah SMB is an A+ movie, set design and effects are at that wonderful early 90s pre-"everything should be CGI"-attitude zenith. it's absolutely ridiculous and the plot and dialogue are unbelievably dumb but damn if it's not fun as hell to watch

I love how simultaneously brick-stupid and clever 'Archer' is. In the S8E7, whilst car-crushing Barry, Archer screams 'Eat a dick, Gort!'. It's a tremendous reference.

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
detective pikachu was so bad you guys im like actually in awe of just how bad it was
it was a bad detective movie, and it was a bad pokemon movie. i could forgive its writing if it felt like it was being a kids' movie, because kids' mystery writing is usually awful, but the whole thing felt so obviously geared towards millennials and our nostalgia that i can't give it a pass for that. the plot had actually ****-all to do with pokemon, because Hollywood is incapable of adapting anything without making it boring generic sci-fi. the only pokemon that mattered are all gen 1 which i'm already burned out on, but i mean it's pikachu centric so what do you expect. it was a ryan reynolds movie, not a pokemon movie, and it was not a particularly good one of those either.
that all said i was definitely entertained. 2/10 movie 7/10 entertainment

...so would it have been better if it were the hard R noir version? You know, Pikachu going after child prostitution rings in Little Tokyo, set in the 1950s?

I get Dragon Ball Super with Hulu so I thought I'd give it a try, but I kind of hated it. I didn't make it through the first episode. Like, I watched Beerus destroy a planet with one finger because he only mostly loved the food he was served and something about that struck me as such a stupid and uninteresting introduction to a villain that I wasn't willing to give it any more of my time.

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
i have mixed feelings about super. i hate the aesthetics, i hate how skinny everyone is, i hate what they did to videl, i hate how no one has aged and no one looks old or frumpy and everyone feels like a hyper-tropey version of themselves. i also pretty much hate what they did with the future trunks arc.
that said, there have been lots of good slice-of-life comedy moments and some fun space adventure worldbuilding, plus despite everything i hated about the future trunks arc i have to say it was a **** dream come true seeing him again. ALSO zamasu was a cool villain. so like. it's cool. but it's nowhere near on z levels of being a quality anime, and i prefer GT by an enormous landslide as a proper sequel and follow-up/resolution.
~~
last thing i watched was a bunch of X-Files because my roommate has been bingeing it. i was only half paying attention but i love how 90's it is. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

So I'm watching 'Tuca and Bertie'.
I can't tell whether I like it or hate it. Perhaps it's both. It's nowhere near as disgustingly smug as 'Big Bang Theory', but that doesn't mean it couldn't do with a good cuff on the ear sometimes.

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
This video is a bit lengthy, but I happened to catch the show a lot in my youth and found this a really interesting read of the series. It seemed to have a much more "left" slant (really just in the form of commentary on the working class and poverty), and it's super dissonant from the production of S10.
I've been following the Dub release of Super just because Sabat and Schemmel are so comfortable with their roles it's hard not to enjoy it, and the weekly pace has me a bit nostalgic for watching Z as a kid. Can't say it's very good though, the animation quality is usually noticeably bad and the character development is trash. Like, they regressed. Goku being so aloof and chaotic and Vegeta ending up the straight man is hilarious tho.
Definitely agree the best episodes are the slice of life ones. But that's been true since Piccolo learned how to drive.

Just finished S8 of 'Archer'.
I liked it a lot, even though it ended on kind of a low. No closure, no big revelations. I suppose that's kind of par for course in noir, though. You know, no clean endings or answers, no deeper meanings. Cynical. It was real good.

I caught up on 'Archer' recently. I watched the newest one yesterday and knew I recognized Mr. Deadly's voice from somewhere. The next thing I watched just happened to be 'What We Do in the Shadows' pilot, so that answered that.

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
I've been getting back into Detective Conan. The last time I caught up to the anime it was in the mid-600's, and while I did end up following the manga for another good 200 chapters after that, I decided I might as well jump back into the anime back where I left off because I sure a **** don't remember everything that's happened in the manga anyway, plus it's fun to see the cases animated and the anime also has its own original murders etc.
The first time I watched Conan I got frustrated by all of the random murders-of-the-week because I wanted more details on the Black Organization and the various mysterious new characters and Kaitou Kid and Heiji etc etc., but I'm at a point now where I just genuinely enjoy the weekly mysteries. After a while they certainly start getting a bit repetitive but there's still nothing quite like watching a mystery drama and seeing all the pieces of evidence and trying to figure out how they get put together. The vast majority of tricks are honestly bonkers, and it's usually really fun to see what kind of crazy ******** some petty douche is gonna employ to kill someone this time. Every now and then there's one that's like "bro, literally anyone could have seen through that in 6 seconds" or relies on a technicality or whatever, but for the most part it has a genuinely good track record of having interesting mysteries, even if many of them rely more on anime logic than actual physics. Sometimes the fun is from figuring out a well-written mystery and sometimes the fun is from "how in the anime **** did that even work, hello????" - it's super enjoyable either way.
The mid 600's have been really good as far as having just really solid one-off mysteries. I think my favorite so far was this one that was set at a TV station where no one actually died (!!!!!!!), it was just a theft - the twist ended up being interesting and heartwarming and I was also just so genuinely shocked that no one dropped dead over some dumb **** that it got extra points.
I got back into it because I got mad about Detective Pikachu's godawful writing again and how they pull that BS of "oh SURPRISE the twist is we didn't actually show you the full scene before and PLOT TWIST!!!!!11" which is the literal laziest trope you can possibly pull in a detective movie, and I wanted to watch something that doesn't do that ****. Was a great decision. I love Detective Conan

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
So the kids are home, and I thought treating everyone to a movie of a Sunday afternoon would be fun, and so I went to the crew for ideas (was secretly certain I'd have to suffer through 'Toy Story 4' or whatever else garbagey pablum was out). My sister, like an angel sent by Crom, pulled down a random showing of 'Kiki's Delivery Service' out of the clear blue sky, and I accepted with wild, demoniacal glee.
Sis and the kids had never seen it before, and it was an opportunity to dust one off my silver screen bucket list. I jumped for it instantly, and I'll never regret it. It was wonderful.
The theatre was almost entirely empty. There were lots and lots of ads before it went off--------a full hour, at least. (Screentime was 12:55---------movie's one hundred three, and we left the theatre right around 3:40). I mean, I love Fathom for giving me the silver-screen experience of all these great movies, but man, talk about preaching to the crusaders here. Nobody steps into a Fathom showing of 'The Harvey Girls' by mistake. Why do these endless previews exist? Anyone who is in the theatre obviously is there because they want to see them get around to 'Shenandoah' or 'Touch of Evil' or 'The Shining' or 'Key Largo' or 'The Kid' or 'The General'! Stop shoveling ads into our maws! We're your audience, clearly we know about the next one! You fools!
Anyway. Movie is and has always been gorgeous, and charming. It was Disney's dub, which is grudgingly acceptible (Emmy isn't square on reading, yet). It's sweet, and well-made. The animation is so, so beautiful. One wonders why Disney keeps bringing over these fantastic anime flicks that make their own current 3D stuff look like a heap of festering crap. Are they not embarrassed to show a Ghibli preview before some piece of f*ck like 'Chicken Little'?

Re: Review The Last Thing You Watched is the next 90's show to get an unnecessary reboot
Bump.
I just binged the first 6 episodes of the horrible Legend of Zelda animated cartoon, because ML mentioned it off-hand and it sent me down an impulsive rabbit hole I don't regret.
The thing about this show is that it's absolutely unbelievable. It's just mindbogglingly incredible. Someone really looked at the Legend of Zelda for NES and was like, you know what we should make this show about, what if it was about Link except he thinks exclusively with his dick.
And yet somehow despite that it's still got all this cool ****? As well as some terrible and bonkers ****? It is SUCH a ride and I feel blessed to live in the same timeline as it.
The orchestral arrangements of the LOZ themes are honestly great, and a lot of the backgrounds are really pretty. I think the design for Hyrule Castle is dope honestly. And Zelda's design? The most 1989 thing I've seen in my life. Thigh-high riding boots over leggings and a vest over a prince-sleeve shirt. It's unironically an amazing design, and she literally kicks as much if not more ass than Link does in every episode.
Like straight up she features just as prominent as Link does in literally every episode so far and she shoots **** down and does physics-defying backflips and ****. They have this tag team power couple energy going on. It's honestly fantastic.
Also, it has that whole "GIMME A KISS PRINCESS" thing going on, which would be uncomfortable if it weren't for the fact that Zelda is not only clearly into it, that they clearly have already had sexy times in every corner of the castle several times over, and that starting around episode five Zelda starts being as openly and intensely horny as Link is the whole time between ass kickings.
I don't really know how to describe this weird dynamic but it's great.
Link's voice actor makes me want to murder someone as does 90% of the dialogue. The triforces look cool and I think it's neat that the writers just made up a bunch of stuff and ran with it.
Absolute monstrosity out of ten, I'm glad it exists, I ordered a VHS of some of the episodes on eBay and can't wait to get a VCR so i can watch them on my crt tv in their low quality lossy glory.
