Jay you bring a good point yes, but you're acting like every single time someone has sex something bad happens.
Now I understand things can happen, and I know there is a good chance, but it's not like everytime someone has sex that an STD or pregnacy will occur, and that's not true, that's why teens are taught to be if not abstinent, to protect themselves, because most adults can face the reality that teens aren't going to stop having sex.
I think, like Andi said, no one will know the effects truly till they're knocked with it.

I would be mortified to realise that my mum felt her entire life was ruined because I was born when she had just turned 17. Even worse to know that my grandmother felt the same coz she gave birth to my mum when she was still 16. :(
Teens... uhhh age range 13 - 19... broad term!
It's my opinion that lack of support contributes to the ruin of some teenage parents lives. They're in that situation now... where was the parental supervision, education, etc in the first place? Throw in a host of rambling here from me about other things that contribute to ruining teenager parents lives and that'll explain it all.
There are many ways to a successful life... college only being one option for some.
Some people will never marry. I wonder how they feel about seeing others advocate that they should abstain from sex for their entire life.
With regard to teens... what a topic, DB!! Anyways... I feel young teens need time in their lives to enjoy life and grow up. Unfortunately, some grow up faster than others due to circumstances. I don't think this makes them any less in any way. I'd hope that my kin and friends don't feel the need to grow up in a hurry by doing things they weren't ready for but didn't know it at the time.
I honestly don't know what I'd say about the topic in general in regard to the broadest expression of "Teens"... I just know what I would and wouldn't do for me. What is right for me, doesn't necessarily make it right for everyone.

Those like to have sex once during their earlier to mid teen years are very likely to have sex over and over again. Thus, if you consider the cummulative odds of disaster go up each time, you do the math. Is one time necesesarily all that bad? Not by itself, but since there is a correlation between an exploration into sex and a continued practice thereof, can we really say it ISN'T a bad thing?

Imo, HotD's got it right. Ya... a lot of people are probably screwed over by sex at a young age. Doesn't mean it always turns out bad. I mean... we do have really good contraceptives now a days.
"it's basically having pleasure without consenquences"
What's wrong with that? I mean... I know sex isn't really a smart thing to do in a lot of cases, but pleasure isn't exactly a bad thing.

There's a guy I know who's basically a male tramp (calls himself a playah) from a message board run by a real-life friend of mine, where 99% of the members all know each other offline and 100% of the members are younger than me....anyway, there was a discussion on that board about sex. The guy I'm talking about made it quite clear to the declared virgins: Good job. Wait as long as you can, because once you start, it's almost impossible to stop.

I know that. But the risks are very real every time. Personally, I wouldn't want to take that risk. If you're stupid, then go ahead.Originally posted by I'm Comin' For That #1 Spot:

I should have made it clearer before...of course every time someone has sex something bad doesn't happen. But the risks of sex are present every time you do it. And of course just because you become pregnant as a teenager it doesn't means your life is ruined. That was an exageration I used for effect. It's good that your family was able to work through the whole teen pregnancy thing, HotD. However, most other families don't have it that easy. In general, teen pregnacies are always much more difficult for the parents than if they had waited until after they were older, more mature, and have stable jobs. It's simply fact. Why mess around with getting the chance of getting pregnant if you're a teen with no stable job and no money, when you can wait until you're in your 20s or 30s and have a stable job at least? It doesn't even have to be college. But at least once you're older you're more mature, more knowledgeable about the world, and most importantly have a stable source of income. In general, most teenagers are not ready for the responcibility of raising a child.
And lets just forget pre-marital sex for now. I'm going to assume that if someone is 30 and single and sleeping around, then they at least have a stable job. So that's at least one less problem than for teen sex.
So yeah, I donno. I feel like I'm going no where with ranting.
I believe the basic thing is that we need to make sure we educate teens so that they know that having sex at their age is simply stupid 100% of the time. (Which I think we in general do). And if they still do it, then well, it's their problem then I guess. I still think we should be a little bit more concerned, and not just take a "it sucks to be you" approach. But I know what you're all saying, some teens are simply too ignorant to realize that it's better to wait.
So yeah, whatever. Heh. Like Kunx said. You all can do whatever you want with your lives. Hense the fact that they're your lives, and not anyone elses. I'm just throwing out observations from a guy who's lived through his teenage years and is now in his early 20s, and has learned a few things. I personally think my advice is pretty good, but yeah, whatever. I'm not going to put a gun to every teenager's head to stop them from having sex.-jay

Ty-bro and Andi own you all
Moshy's main point seems to be that each situation is entirely different to the next and just because you have some black and white ideas about the world, doesn't mean things are always gonna turn out that way.
Of course, with all risks considered, what's wrong with physical pleasure?

Andre, that's basically what others have said. Not all of them keep their word, though. Once they find out it IS true, many teen fathers make as many excuses to not be involved at all. I'm not saying all of them, though. I'm sure there are a few who stood by their side, because the baby is the parents' responsibility. Course, that's only a few.Originally posted by I'm Comin' For That #1 Spot:

This reminds me of a time when there was a classmate of mine. He gloated almost every week that he had sex with different girls. It was until one day he came to school with a blank expression. Explaining to his friends, he had caught an STD. He's 15 years old, and got something he's got for the rest of his life.
You see, with multiple partners, they can lie and say they don't have STDs or this is their first time. Even know that condoms are supposed to be used as a sheild, like all sheilds, they can break.

Well, what do you guys mean by teen sex?
The majority of North Americans start having sex at around 17. Do the majority of North Americans have ruined lives? Hell no. Like SD said, what's wrong with physical pleasure? The best thing we can do right now is to just educate people on the subject. Ever since we stopped the idiotic practice of "Abstinince! Abstinice! Abstinice!" teen pregnencies have shot way, way down. This despite the fact that sexual relationships have gone up.
Teens are going to have sex weather you approve of it or not. You're simply reatrded if you don't want to educate them on safe sex.
Oh, on the condom issue. Almost all times that condom use fails is because the user didn't apply it correctly. Those things need a lot of stress to tear. And as for the 85% figure... numbers like that are put out by the religious right. They're simply false.
Finally, if you don't want to do it... then fine. If someone else gets knocked up because they don't take the precautions then it doesn't affect you. Less competetion to get into college.

I think the best two points brought up in this topic have come from HotD and of course L2K, though everyone had real good points.
Jay, DB, Vinny, Andre, and especially Andi .
I was a dad at the age of 19, and I had enough responsibility to take care of my child.
It's not impossible to go to college after having a child, well I was already in college, and so I just had my wife (at time my girlfriend), stay in my apartment, I was able to get night classes 3 days a week, and she got day classes 4 days a week, the days I didn't have to go to school, I had a job, and my family (all of them) supported me, both parents were there for the baby and had enough support through their own income and from family to help raise that baby, we've had money to the side we saved from childhood bought out to raise my second child.

I don't think there is anyone here who has said that we shouldn't educate teens on safe sex. I believe most people here have already agreed with your statement.Originally posted by Link2000:

And Cornell, if things are working well for you, then good. At least you were smart enough to wait until after high school. I'm not quite as concerned about high school graduates as I am of middle schoolers and high schoolers, though. If you finished high school, then you at least have a high school degree to work with.

I can vouch for this. We had someone at school that came and said,"ABSTININCE OMG WTF". Before this, the school was rather sex-free. After the talk, about 6 kids dropped out of school, 7-8 grade. Never saw or heard from any again.Originally posted by Link2000:
