Oscars 2019

#1

Post by CaptHayfever » Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:44 pm

Nominees were announced today; ceremony is on Feb 24th.

Nominees I've seen....

Black Panther (Picture, Score, Song, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Costume Design)
Incredibles 2 (Animated Feature)
Bao (Animated Short)
A Quiet Place (Sound Editing)
Avengers: Infinity War (Visual Effects)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (Visual Effects)

Nominees I wanna see....

Bohemian Rhapsody (Picture, Lead Actor, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing)
BlacKkKlansman (Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Score, Film Editing)
A Star Is Born (Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Song, Cinematography, Sound Mixing)
Vice (Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Film Editing, Makeup)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Animated Feature)
Ralph Breaks the Internet (Animated Feature)
Isle of Dogs (Animated Feature, Score)
Christopher Robin (Visual Effects)

Predictions (which are mostly politics-based since I haven't seen many of the films)....
Spoiler.
Picture: They won't want to risk Lee or Singer at the mic to close the show, & they definitely won't give it to Marvel or Adam McKay. Probably Green Book or Roma.
Director: Most likely Cuaron, but Lee & McKay can be considered contenders here as well.
Original Screenplay: One of the Best Picture nominees.
Adapted Screenplay: Coens or Cooper.
Lead Actor: Rami Malek, hands down.
Lead Actress: Very hard call. Might be McCarthy, so the Academy can pretend it doesn't hate comedians. Might be Gaga 'cause of the hype train.
Support Actor: Another hard call. I'm gonna say Rockwell, just because.
Support Actress: Stone & Weisz split their film's vote, so neither of them. I'm pulling for Regina King.
Animated Feature: Incredibles & Ralph both failed to impress, AND they'll split the Disney vote. It'll be either Spider-Verse or Wes Anderson.
Animated Short: Bao, so Pixar doesn't go home empty-handed.
Documentary Feature: I'm protesting this category because Won't You Be My Neighbor was snubbed.
Documentary Short: IDK.
Live-Action Short: IDK.
Foreign Language: Roma, just in case Cuaron doesn't get Picture or Director.
Score: Hard call, but probably either Panther or Shaiman/Wittman.
Song: "Shallow", just in case Gaga doesn't get Actress.
Visual Effects: It won't be Infinity War; the RotK-esque "full series" Oscars will come next year for Endgame. Hopefully won't be Ready Player One either; that movie didn't look so great. Obvious choice is Solo, spoiler choice is Christopher Robin.
Costume Design: Panther.
Production Design: Panther.
Sound Mixing: Bohemian Rhapsody or A Star Is Born.
Sound Editing: A Quiet Place or Bohemian Rhapsody.
Film Editing: IDK.
Makeup & Hair: IDK.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

A Quiet Place is like 90 lines of script. What kind of sound editing did they do?

For god's sake, the guy probably put a few socks over the boom and called it a day.

Did they just throw Black Panther into the mix so they wouldn't get crucified? I get the whole African American heritage thing and all but I missed the boat on being blown away by that film.

If Christopher Robin is being nominated for visual effects then imagine a world where furry sonic might be nominated for an Oscar one day.

^All the sound effects in the film. There's more to audio than just dialogue.
Black Panther probably shouldn't be up for Best Picture*, but it's definitely deserving of its design & music nominations.
Every single shot of the Christopher Robin trailer looked worlds better than the Sonic posters.

*Last summer, the Academy announced the creation of a new category, "Best Popular Film." It was rightly met with outcry over how patronizing that is, & they dropped the category shortly afterwards. However, Black Panther was probably going to be nominated in that category rather than Best Picture.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

A Quiet Place has **** amazing audio direction and sound editing BECAUSE there’s no dialogue. The entire movie is about sound. There is a huge emphasis on sound. The lack of dialogue makes the remaining sounds much more pronounced. Come on.

Also, hyped for this to be the first year in for **** ever for Disney to not win Best Animated Feature, although I was certain last year would do it because Kubo was breathtakingly incredible. Maybe Spider-verse is enough of a pop culture blockbuster to actually break the trend. (Disclaimer: not a jab at Spider-verse. A jab at how much of a joke the category has been at the Oscars historically.)

Can't believe Gotti got snubbed in all major categories.

I don't have a horse in the race this year like I did last year (LADY BIRD GOT ROBBED) but of the three Best Picture nominees I've seen so far (Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman and A Star Is Born) I'd like BlacKkKlansman to win the most. It's an imperfect film, but it was powerful. I don't have any interest in the other Best Picture nominees outside of The Favourite and Roma. I haven't seen any of the other performances, but I'd be shocked if Lady Gaga doesn't win Best Actress. She's fantastic in that movie. I haven't seen Minding the Gap yet but I want it to win Best Documetary because it was directed by a friend of a friend and that's cool as hell. I'd really enjoy it if Green Book (aside from Ali) and Bohemian Rhapsody didn't go home with anything.

Was hoping for a screenplay nomination for Sorry to Bother You and an editing nomination for Searching. Alas. Also would've liked Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and a posthumous nod for Johann Johannsson in Best Original Score.

Edit: I'd also love to see Buster Scruggs win in the screenplay category. I haven't seen all the vignettes yet but from what I have seen of the movie, it's classic Coen Brothers. Has absolutely no chance with that competition though. At least we'll likely have Tim Blake Nelson onstage performing "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings."

Edit x2: I guess these are my official predictions despite not seeing a lot of things....

Best Picture: A Star Is Born. Black Panther is too much of a blockbuster. Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody are probably too controversial. Voters who want to be more political will probably be split between Vice and BlacKkKlansman. Roma isn't in English and your average Joe doesn't know what the hell the Favourite is. Give it to the safe choice that a lot of people saw that was pretty much made for awards shows.

Lead Actor: Bale. Could see Cooper winning, but gave Bale the edge because Method.

Lead Actress: Gaga. She deserves it. I didn't *love* A Star Is Born but the Gaga hype is real and I've been onboard with her winning since I bawled through the final scene of that movie.

Supporting Actor: Ali. I have no interest in ever seeing Green Book but I assume Ali is great here because he's great in everything. Elliott is also strong here.

Supporting Actress: King. I haven't seen Beale Street yet but King seems like a shoe-in from everything I've heard.

Director: Cuaron.

Animated Feature: I'm not convinced a non-Disney/Pixar film can win this award until I see it. Incredibles 2

Animated Short: "Bao."

Adapted Screenplay: If Beale Street Could Talk. Very surprised at no Best Picture/Director award for Jenkins' follow-up to Moonlight so I could see them throwing him a bone here.

Original Screenplay: Green Book. THEY SOLVED RACISM

Cinematography: Cuaron.

Documentary Feature: RBG.

Documentary Short: I dunno, "Black Sheep"?

Live Action Short: I dunno, "Skin"?

Foreign Language Film: I mean, this one's obviously Roma.

Film Editing: BlacKkKlansman

Sound Editing: A Quiet Place makes too much sense here.

Sound Mixing: First Man

Production Design: Black Panther

Original Score: THOM YORKE FOR SUSPIRIA YOU IDIOTS Desplat for Isle of Dogs

Original Song:

Make Up and Hair: Vice

Costume Design: The Favourite

Visual Effects: Ready Player One. I didn't care for what I remember of the movie but that Spielberg sure does know how to make them moving pictures look purty

Oscars announced that only "Shallow" and "All the Stars" will be getting live performances at the show, which is just absolute garbage.

^Yeah, that's absurd, unless there was some kind of issue with the performers/rights holders for the other 3 songs.

^Yeah, I know that's the actual reason. I'm just saying it's not the only good reason.

Better ways to cut time:
--Shorten the opening (there's no host this year anyway)
--Cut the sketches (again, there's no host anyway)
--Cut the long clips out of the in-memoriam reel
--Hold people to time on their speeches
--Don't have the announcer take a full minute to tell us what's gonna be in the next segment before each commercial

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Yeah I don't think I really care at all about this year's Oscars because lots of good stuff was snubbed.

Yeah after watching some more 2018 stuff Hawke definitely got snubbed for best actor, Eighth Grade deserves a screenplay award and an actress nod for Elsie Fisher, and Annihilation should be up for technical awards

I haven't seen Green Book but I was surprised that it was nominated. I do want to see it though. I just thought judging by the trailer and how late in the year it was going to be released that it was simply a "good movie" - not amazing or Oscar worthy, just a "good movie".

Spoiler.
My condolences go out to Green Book for getting Best Picture over Black Panther. #OscarsSoNotDisney

Wish I could say more, but unfortunately I'm not a movie guy. It doesn't seem like any of them were undeserving...

I am actually shocked Spiderverse won Animated Feature. Guess it's not impossible to get the award. You just need a unique animation style and an established comic book series.

I thought Green Book looked interesting from the trailers, but I've heard that it's not very good.

I don't know why we really bother with the Oscars anymore. It's always something like:

Best Picture nominees
-lol no
-no
-no
-nope
-movie that's only on there because they recognize that "it's a thing" but they're seriously not considering it
-movie that everyone wants to win but won't
-movie that nobody saw or cared much about that wins

And then
Okay which of you mimicked a famous quirky dead person or a mental illness or physical deformity the best? Cool here's your prize

And all this other crap you haven't seen unless you live in a town with an independent movie theater

and Disney

But on a serious note, I'm glad that Spider-verse actually won.
