I was kinda forced to watch "A Bullet for the General." It's a standard old Western with a few intense scenes sprinkled throughout. The guy who played Chuncho was a great actor. The ending was a bit disturbing, I didn't like how Chuncho was so irrational and unreasonable but it wasn't a bad scene.

3/10 because I hate **** old movies, 8/10 for a **** old movie.

^ Coco honestly renewed my faith in Pixar. Favorite movie of theirs since Brave, which is one of my favorite movies period. They both have such great rewatch value in their stunning visuals and music alone, and the character dynamics are so endearing and UGH I adore that movie.

2/55 - I watched The Dark Knight for the first time my flight to California. Oh, and I also watched Batman and Harley, hence the 2. Both were pretty good, but I really loved the Dark Knight more than I thought I would. It kind of makes me mad that DC movies lately just suck so much. Batman and Harley was a pretty good one, too, but so aren't most of the animated films DC puts out.

Kabali was the result of drunkenly watching a Bollywood movie one night. Monster Trucks was baffling but not as hilariously bad as I was hoping. Rob Lowe does have the worst accent I've ever heard in a movie though. Wish Upon... now THAT's a bad movie. If you're looking for a horror movie with no scares but terrible dialogue like "She's a slut for wontons" and "Woah, you dig on multiverses!?" this is a movie for you. Graded it a D but it's probably a B+ in entertainment value. Bright just straight-up sucked. Needlessly complicated, Landis' script sucks and hearing the phrase "magic wand" so many times in a movie that tries to be this GRITTY is hilarious. The Meyerowitz Stories is fine. one of the better Netflix originals from last year that I've seen. Not Baumbach's best but it's decently funny and nice to remember that Adam Sandler can act sometimes. The Snowman was baffling. Another movie that is really ****ing bad but still not bad enough that it's probably worthwhile. Maybe I just wasn't drunk enough.

Then this morning I did a double feature of The Polka King and the documentary that inspired it. The new movie is fine, I guess. It's got a really solid cast. Black does his best to make Lewan sympathetic and Slate is good as always in her role. The thing is, I think they might have sympathized with Lewan (who is responsible for a multi-million dollar ponzi scheme) too much. I don't think the script knew how to deal with the situation as a comedy. It probably would've been better if it took more of a black comedy approach and made the movie more satirical when it came to the "American dream" that Lewan speaks of. Though I'm wondering if Lewan's family had something to do with his portrayal after seeing the documentary about him. They've stood by him saying that he didn't mean any harm by the ($10 million) scheme and it was a lapse in judgment, which for a good portion of the film is the stance it seems to take. Also the side-plot with Schwartzman and Weaver's characters was... weird and felt out of place. The documentary itself was interesting. As somebody who's worked in a place with polka bands it's interesting to see how a scummy guy like Lewan kind of took advantage of that scene. Documentary had a clear mix of people who knew the guy was a con artist and those who still seem to be under his spell. Issues were that it seemed pretty cheap (I know there was a TruTV logo at the start but that still doesn't excuse a film that looked like somebody edited it in Movie Maker over the course of an hour at times). And there was a pointless "host" to the documentary who was an actor playing a guy who was a veteran of the Philadelphia polka scene. Him appearing on camera and having a "character" instead of just narrating the story was just silly. Got too cute with it.

Anyway that's way too many words about Jan Lewan. Everything else I saw that I didn't write about was stuff I've already seen.

I SAW THE GINTAMA LIVE ACTION MOVIE IN THEATERS OMG

My roommate saw the tickets (they were really poorly, last-minute advertised like a week ago), I managed to get the day off work, and OMG IT WAS SO WORTH. There was like no one else in the audience except 5 awkward middle-aged people who I don't think really knew what they were getting into, but me and my roommate got decked out in weeb fashion and had a damn blast laughing our asses off in the back of the theater. Now I want to cosplay someone from Gintama and also marathon the entire manga and/or anime series.

1000000/10 - some parts of it were weirdly paced, awkward, didn't translate well, or strangely choreographed, but I don't even care it was awesome

Back story with the recurring character, Elise, was great. Length and backstory were both well executed. The only issue I have is there was another recurring character there that didn't make 100% sense to me... I did enjoy the twists and turns of the plot (wasn't much, but it was nice!)
Characters were played well, since they were mostly meant to be awkward, comedic relief. Story was great, plot was great, sequel is great, acting pretty good for the most part. Ending kinda meh, but overall I'd watch it again (at home lol)

Generally, I'm not a tough movie critic. I can probably count all the movies I have ever disliked on one hand but this movie was bad all around. While I appreciate the story, the background was prolonged. Questions were left unanswered. The acting was wayyyyy too forced and the special effects look like someone just put poorly edited overlays on scenes. The effort is there I guess but eeeehhhhhhh

5/55 - I ended up watching Atomic Blonde and Dunkirk on the way back home. Dunkirk was a really good war movie, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it all the way through. Atomic Blonde was okay. I'm not usually a fan of action movies so I didn't expect to like this one much either. Especially the way it ended, it was kind of disappointing considering so many people were praising it.

Aside from that I watched Insidious 3, which was a really good horror film. It tied all the movies together extremely well.

Holy crap but I watched some movies this past week. Most of them kids' movies. Any of you guys spent time with a two-year-old lately? You know how two-year-olds kind of fixate on certain movies and want to watch them over and over? Well, Emmy is two, and in the past week I spent roughly a hundred sixty-eight hours watching what Emmy wanted to watch, and Emmy's tastes aren't great.

'The Emoji Movie'-----------ugh. Total crap. It's so, so weak. 0/10
'Angry Birds Movie'----------not quite as bad as ^that, but still pretty effin bad. 3/10
'Captain Underpants'----------fairly clever, as it goes. 6/10
'Leap!' (or 'Ballerina')----------pretty good. 6/10
'Kung-Fu Panda'------------it's fine. 6/10
'Kung-Fu Panda 2'------------also fine. 6/10
'Mulan II'------------...I have rarely in my life hated a fictional character as much as I hate Mushu in this movie. What an evil self-serving conniving little son-of-a-bitch. Like, the rest of the movie is okay, but Mushu is so disgusting that I don't even want to think about it any more. 0/10
'Minions'-------------waste of time. Why devote an entire movie to these interchangeable little morons. It's so odd. Like, yeah, of course I like Scarlet. I'd watch a Scarlet movie in a heartbeat. Duh. But this isn't the Scarlet movie, it's the stupid Minions movie. Ick. 2/10

...watched a couple movies with just my sister and brother-in-law, as well.

'Kingsman'------------man, what a riot. 9/10
'Valerian'-------------I didn't really understand what was going on. It was a clustercuss, and not in a good way. Luc Besson can do good action, and he can do good space opera, and this was neither. Dunno what was missing, but something was. 5/10
'Kingsman 2'-------------still a riot. 9/10
'Bright'-------------...this should have been a TV series. I'd watch a police-procedural set in Shadowrun. This wasn't that. It was 'District 9' times 'Lethal Weapon', but, like, nowhere near as rad as that should be. Squandered potential. 4/10

And we went to see some movies.

New 'Jumanji' flick------------it was alright. 6/10
'Coco'------------charming throughout. 9/10

LITERALLY not watchable idk if i could count this as a movie i watched because i spent most of it on my phone googling why it was made and who thought it was a good idea. it is the most boring action movie ever made, it's like they made an entire garbage movie out of what should be the training montage of a marginally better one. i say marginally because the premise is still garbo no matter how well they could maybe have developed it if they even tried a little.

1. The Fantastic Four: no, not the latest one, not even the ones before that, I'm talking about the underground, never-officially-released crappy production from like 1993. I got it a long time ago at Comic Con NYC. It's so bad but so good. There's no way to really rate this other than to say "LOL".

2. The Post: B+ Decided to watch some Oscar-nominated movies. Typical Spielberg fare. Good stuff.

3. Phantom Thread: A. Just jumped into this not knowing what it was. I enjoyed it more than The Post.

4. Iron Man: A. I'm rewatching all the Marvel movies in order to prep for Infinity War. This was it - this was how Marvel Studios started.

5. Iron Man 2: B+. A lot of people hated this movie but I honestly love it. I love Stark being a stubborn dick about nobody helping him as he's slowly being poisoned, and ending up doing crazy things because screw it, he might die soon, and then trying to reconcile with Pepper. (*Cough*maybebecauseipersonallyidentifywiththatsentiment*cough*) It's still really enjoyable and after all debuts Nick Fury and Black Widow. By the way, I don't think ScarJo ever looked as good again as she does here playing Black Widow.

6. The Incredible Hulk: C-. So the last time I saw this was in theaters. That's how long I haven't seen it. I rewatched it and oh my God - it's so bad compared to the other Marvel movies. Even as just a superhero movie - it's so bland. Bruce Banner doesn't feel like he has any character - I almost felt like I was watching some generic Jason Bourne-like movie of a guy with special skills on the run from the government. Mark Ruffalo definitely added some more character to Bruce Banner, some more awkwardness. This was just blaaaaaaand. Bland, bland, bland. Oh my Lord.

7. Thor: B+. Ah, when I watched this immediately after The Incredible Hulk it was so refreshing. SO refreshing. The humor, the setup, the plot. Could just be a tiny bit better to be on part with the first Iron Man. But it's great anyway.

^I feel like I should check out that 'Fantastic Four' flick some time.

I really don't care about the Fantastic Four. They're boring. About the best thing I could say about them is that they're iconic. Like, they've been a part of good things, and given rise to good things, without bein any good themselves. ('X-Men vs Fantastic Four' remains one of my favourite graphic novels of all time. It's a really good book.)

RLM had ^this 'Fantastic Four' on an ep of 'Best of the Worst' once upon a time. It won easily (against 'Supergirl' and the stupid nineties 'Captain America', but still). They seemed to legitimately enjoy it-------------that's a huge 'yes!' to me.

(EDIT: Tell you what I want to see, is a 'Girl Genius' movie. It could happen. Evidently all it takes is some Hollywood guy with some pull to like your comic. That's how 'Tintin' and 'Valerian' and 'Sin City' and 'Hellboy' got made. Not to mention that fake The Goon trailer (I'll eat my hat the day that hits theatres). 'Girl Genius' could do it. It's got the chops.

Oh wait, crap. Comedy specials count as movies, don't they? I mean, like so what if they're only an hour. Lots of kids movies barely scratch 70 minutes, and it'd be hard to argue comedians are padding it harder than Sony.

16, 'Brian Regan: Nunchucks and Flamethrowers'-----------really funny. Brian Regan's one of the best clean comedians I can think of. Much rather watch him than Larry the Cable Guy or some sh*t. 9/10
17. 'Norm Macdonald: Hitler's Dog, Gossip and Trickery'-------------also really funny. Norm goes to weird places. Dark places. He works blue, but he builds up to it. I love him, man. Favourite comedian ever, right there. 10/10
