A Knight's First Day at the Office -- Retrospective

So, today (May 20) was the first day of my new job as an editor at my ingenious uncle’s hugely successful publishing empire that, in a way, still operates like a family-owned business.

To summarize, it was about as intense and varied as I had expected. All I had to do was: 1) meet the staff; 2) learn how to use a program to keep track of hours and projects; 3) go over some employee specifications; 4) eat lunch; 5) learn some security specifications; and 6) spend much of the afternoon putting together a study guide for the first of a series of on-the-job tests.

As if I haven’t already gone through enough testing.

But the staff was very welcoming, and I felt like I fit in rather neatly. I have high hopes for tomorrow’s first of several tests to see if I understand the company’s editing style guide.

Awesome there's nothing like having friendly, open staff to talk to. Good for you man.

I'm glad you're enjoying your work!

As an editor myself I'm very familiar with Chicago, and now APA for references, so if you have any questions about those, talk to me! :D

^Thanks, Kat! It's really fun to know that I have a Pop-Tart eating feline that leaves a trail of rainbows in space for a consultant. :) Actually, there are a lot of people in the company who own cats, so I think you'd fit right in.

So, Second Day at the Office: I passed the first style guide tests, I got to meet with a co-worker to discuss editing a slide presentation that accompanies a set of materials we're publishing, and I learned the proper technique for scanning and archiving edited materials.

Really, overall, still a great working environment where nobody loses their cool and "seldom is heard a discouraging word." These are seriously some of the happiest posts I've ever posted to VGF.
