^Okay, if you think you know what you're talking about, then I'm genuinely curious: why did you start smoking in the first place when you know it's bad for your health?
Do you think it makes you look more mature or sophisticated?
Do you think it makes you look distinguished or stylish?
Do you think it will help you be accepted by your peers?
Do you simply not care about your lungs?
I've heard plenty of perspectives from medical and psychological experts, but I guess, in all fairness, I'd have a more complete story if I heard a testimonial from an actual smoker.

Well if you're gonna have a rod up your ass the size of a elephants trunk KR, I'll be more than happy to shove it in further;
I started smoking because I was a stupid teenager.
Do I care about my lungs? Of course I do, hence attempting to quit.
I agree that starting is stupid, but you getting anal and self righteous pisses me off, you who probably lack any form of knowledge on the culture behind it, why people start, why people quit.
I bet you do LOADS of things bad for your little body, yet there is no stigma against whatever it is you do unlike there is with smoking.
I'm gonna assume you're young, judging from the content and style of your posts, so maybe its just you're young and a little sheltered. But there's a lot more too it than 'trying to look mature' or 'cool' jesus christ thats the biggest load of horse **** i've read in my life.

oh good the "why do you do this thing that tends to be bad for you" question
Tell me, have you ever had Hostess or Little Debbie, or really any kind of snack foods? You know, the ones loaded with sugars, fats, empty calories
Why do you consume products with high fructose corn syrup, that ****'s more addictive than many drugs and much worse
Why are you online, not enjoying the great outdoors and getting exercise
Smoking cigars was a way for me to relieve stress. Being able to just stand outside for even ten minutes, puffing on a smoke, it relaxed me. I switched to little cigars because one, they're Swischer so they have a decent flavor range, and two I could smoke it in the same time as a cigarette.
It's not my only reason but it sure as hell isn't "to look cool". If I wanted to look cool I'd have shaven a month ago.

Personally, I don't go Hostess or high fructose. That's why I shop for organic food.Loot wrote: *Other stuff about sweets.*

Excuse me! I never wanted to start a fight! I just posted something in reply to IRHP, which was somehow read as a personal attack.Loot]Smoking cigars was a way for me to relieve stress. Being able to just stand outside for even ten minutes wrote:
I can see why people think that way...thank you for your perspective.

Does that imply medical and psychology experts don't know your type as well as they think they do?LASER BEAR ASSAULT UNIT wrote:there's a lot more too it than 'trying to look mature' or 'cool' jesus christ thats the biggest load of horse **** i've read in my life.
Where's TML when you need him? He's good at resolving stuff like this.

KR, have you ever had any loved ones who smoked & struggled to quit? When I was little, I watched both of my parents quit smoking, & I quickly understood that it was difficult, frustrating, & somewhat painful for them. The last thing they would've needed was me asking them or making assumptions as to why they started in the first place.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

One or two family members, but they died before I was born.CaptHayfever wrote:KR, have you ever had any loved ones who smoked & struggled to quit?
Oh, and my cousin, who is still alive and not a smoker anymore.[DOUBLEPOST=1394570445,1394570296][/DOUBLEPOST]
I see what you mean, buddy. I just imagined asking my cousin now why she started smoking and then gave up shortly thereafter, leading to disastrous results. Probably have to get a psychology degree before I go around asking questions like that.CaptHayfever wrote:The last thing they would've needed was me asking them or making assumptions as to why they started in the first place.
The thing is, to say a smoker starts smoking for all those reasons that doctors say they start smoking is judging a book by its cover, and I should've known better than that.
On a similar note, my mother makes no effort to hide the fact she hates that I like video games. She's judging a whole volume of books by their covers, and that's not a good way to go around it, especially if you yourself are not a gamer or friends with any gamers.

I wouldn't even advise it with a psych degree. My mom did her undergrad in psych and used it to generalize the **** out of me as a teenager when none of the things she said to me about me were actually true. The key is in knowing how to apply it, and this goes for every field, which she didn't in this case.
And, yeah, there's a lot more to smoking than people tend to assume. Also true for drinking and gaming, among other things.

Taking care of your physical health by doing things that are considered "good" for your constantly-aging and inevitably-dying body and taking care of your mental health by engaging an urge or desire are two different things.
The idea that smokers who struggle to smoke do not have "willpower" is absolutely ridiculous. The matter is entirely that they are chemically and circumstantially made up as a person who enjoys smoking and has the willpower to continue engaging that habit even while the rest of their body and society routinely tells them not to; they have a very difficult time curbing their own internal desires. What smokers want is to continue smoking and to be socially and physically healthy, but these things contradict one another. Smoking brings them an immediate satisfaction, but damages the long-term viability of their social and physical health.
To make matters more complicated, a person who enjoyed smoking may no longer enjoy smoking, but may also find no pleasure in quitting. Weighing one scenario versus the other, they will still use the immediately less unpleasant option.
Half of psychology is philosophy, and the truth of philosophy depends entirely on the truth of the use of concepts. If you are using concepts like absence of willpower to describe a person whose power of will is inescapably strong, your understanding of their psychology is horribly askew.

You're awesome and you don't need them. I promise. If you or anyone else has a hard time quitting and needs to message me on fb or whatever to **** cigarettes and how they're bastards and owe us money or something, I'm there. Or here. Wherever. On the internet, really, cept when I'm not. You know what I mean.User Name wrote:^Speaking of accomplishments, it's been a week since I've smoked a cigarette. Boom. I'm optimistic.
