Men are/were typically considered dominant because of their testosterone making them the natural leaders of whatever tribes they consisted of. They evolved to be leaders, and as sexist as that may be, it is true amongst almost any other animal that one gender evolved to dominate over the other. Hyenas, interestingly enough, have females as the dominate one in their social hierarchy, as female hyenas typically have much more testosterone than men, and do most of the work in their clan.

The difference between humans and most other animals, though, is our intelligence, which is why things like gender roles are so different to us.

^^ We're very similar, mostly. However, there are obvious differences that even a child could point out, and we have clear differences that are more subtle, too. Overall, I trust a female as much as a male in most cases, but each gender has specific advantages and disadvantages which need to be accepted. They don't make us "less equal" by any means, though, and there's generally an exception to every rule. I know there's plenty of women out there stronger than men, for example.
