Might have a new job soon

A buddy of mine works on an oil rig and he got his boss to refer me so hopefully within the next few months I'll be doing that too. Apparently it's a job that requires a degree or you can get referred by a current employee so hey cool. I'd be working as an MWD hand for Halliburton in North Dakota making upwards of 100k a year, so I'm really nervous about it. Especially because it's the kind of job that's really a career more than it is a job. I am told the degree really doesn't matter because this guy is really important: basically a company man rather than an employee.

I'm nervous about it, to be honest. I'd be driving out to North Dakota, working two weeks then driving home. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea and I don't exactly know what to do... but the situation that happened with my last girlfriend kind of left my life a mess so this seems like the most appealing option.

For those of you who don't know what an MWD hand is, I'd basically be using trigonometry to measure how much oil is in a well and how well it is flowing through the ground. To do this, I'd have to use math and analyze mud samples.

It's not the job description that's the problem so much as it is the sudden change. I've never had a problem with math and honestly I still remember trig from high school. It's never been difficult for me. The hard part would be probably the trip out there and the hours. 30 hour drive there, working two weeks 12 hours a day, 30 hour drive back, off two weeks.

I really really want this. I think. I mean, honestly the career I'd chosen didn't seem to be panning out anyway and I was never sure I'd be any good at it. I'm just not really sure what to do. I mean, I've never been dead set on any one career choice to begin with and this seems like a good place to start. I'm just worried I'll crash and die on the way out there or something because I hate driving for long periods of time...

It sounds like you really want it so don't worry about the car ride. Just make sure you have essentials in case of an emergency, but it sounds like it's worth it. I hope you get it and you love it! Sounds like a great opportunity!

Yeah i was considering train rides but i'd still have a considerable amount of driving while out there

Even though the commute feels ridiculous (it is), you only have to do it every few weeks. As opposed to me, who would be driving a half hour (upwards of an hour in heavy traffic) then taking the metro every day if I get this job (still worth it zomfg)

Anyway my point is that it evens out. GOOD LUCK BRO

It is a bit of a challenge working away from home but it is doable, i only work 5-7 days away maybe 8-10 if i really have to.

I think it's quite enjoyable with the rides to and from work but it all depends on your own disposition towards it!

Yeah im excited about it but its just troublesome it seems like it'll be a tough job and a tough drive. Either way i wont know until march

Since you really want this, I wish you all the bestest luck with the job, monstr. Eh, when driving, remember to drive with care for yourself and other users, take regular breaks, don't drive tired and keep your headlights on at all times. I hope you resolve the travelling issues and find a balance that suits you...
