NOT AGAIN
NOPE DON'T NEED THIS CRAP
CRUSHES SUCK.
Honestly, though, I really don't feel like going back to being fourteen. I'm pretty glad I'm past that, but good lord, I don't feel like something similar happening.

I'd say you can't help who you like, and while I'm 90% sure that's actually scientifically true, it's invariably not helpful.
Honestly, I wouldn't completely write off high school crushes, though I think you're at least wise enough to not be completely enamored with them. High school sort of absorbed most of my attention at the time, and I was only barely looking forward the life that existed outside of that. And honestly I'm definitely a more alert guy than I was back then.
That said, if you want to go for it, you shouldn't beat yourself up just because you like someone. Even if you go out and it turns out to be a bust, it will teach you things for later on in life, and that's good enough to not wholly just write it off. :)

I am personally of the "if you like someone and they aren't taken, go for it!" camp.
It's true that the vast majority of the time it won't work out. Maybe you'll be rejected right off the bat, maybe you'll date for a while and then break up, maybe the break up will go badly and maybe it won't. Whatever. The point is that no matter what, hearing someone say "yes" feels amazing and dating someone is exciting and then when things go wrong even though it hurts your favorite flavor if ice cream never tastes better. Plus you can always learn from these experiences.

I believe in second chances, and that's why I believe in you.
