The Most Beautiful Story In The World
One day a writer, who had written many books but didn’t have many fans and few people had bought and read his books, while sitting in the snug corner of his room staring with a sorrowful look at his books which he has set on the bookshelf, is suddenly possessed by a strange feeling and begins to hate himself and all the books he has written up to that day. He feels really tired that he hasn’t been able to become a famous writer and write books that attract a lot of readers, and that he has spent all his life in vain.
Feeling completely disappointed, the writer places his head on his knees and all these thoughts play around in his head to such an extent that he loses all hope for the future when, at the height of despair, he suddenly decides to write a book that will be the most beautiful book in the world and be read by all the people in the world. The writer immediately rises and energetically takes his pen and papers, lies on his bed and, with high hopes of writing the most beautiful book in the world, begins to write.
After a bit of thought, the writer finally decides to write the story of a painter who had painted many paintings but didn’t have many fans and few people had seen or bought his paintings. The painter, while sitting in the snug corner of his room, is suddenly possessed by a strange feeling and begins to hate himself and all his paintings. He feels really tired that he hasn’t been able to become a famous painter and paint paintings that attract a lot of admirers, and that he has spent all his life in vain.
The disappointed and hopeless painter places his head on his knees and all these thoughts play around in his head to such an extent that he loses all hope for the future when, at the height of despair, he suddenly decides to paint a painting that will be the most beautiful painting in the world and attract all the people in the world. With his head still on his knees, he closes his eyes and thinks about the subject of his painting and soon, with his mind full of images, falls asleep.
In a dream, the painter notices the shadow of a girl in the distance who in the fanciful world of dreams, with the wind in her hair, walks slowly and rhythmically towards him. As she gets closer, she gains more color, and when she is near the artist, her beautiful face becomes visible in the pale light. The girl is so astonishingly beautiful and attractive that the painter is dazzled by her face and unable to think of anything else.
After a while the girl stands in front of the painter and breaks the silence with her lovely voice echoing in the world of the dream: “I am the most beautiful face in the world. When I heard you were going to paint the most beautiful painting, I decided to come to you to tell you that if you want to reach your goal paint my face. Then people will come to see it from the four corners of the world and you will become the most famous painter in the world.
The painter wakes up from astonishment and delight. Stunned and stressed, he jumps to his feet and still confused and amazed, as if he were still dreaming, takes pen and paper, lies down on the bed and, still disconcerted, begins.
Happy to have reached his great goal and all confused and utterly baffled, occasionally wiping the cold sweat off his forehead with his cuff, he tries for hours to draw her face before forgetting it.
The painter continues his efforts but the more time elapses, the more the face fades away from him, and he concludes that he will never be able to draw the face. Until he finally becomes hopeless and tired and finds all his dreams gone. He becomes so sad that he tears the papers in front of him into pieces, breaks his pen and casts it in the corner and, utterly tired and disappointed, falls into a deep sleep on his bed.
The writer takes a deep breath and wipes the sweat off his forehead with his cuff, and excitedly, hoping to write the most beautiful book in the world, to the loud beating of his heart, keeps trying. But no matter how much he thinks, he cannot continue, and says to himself: “Well! What about the rest of the story? Will the painter manage to draw the face? No! Maybe this way the painter reaches his goal but what about me? This wouldn’t be the most beautiful story in the world. What does the painter dream after he falls asleep out of fatigue?
With these thoughts in mind, the writer tries to go on. He tries again and again, but the more he tries the more hopeless it seems, and he concludes that he will never be able to finish this story. Until he finally becomes hopeless and tired and finds all his dreams gone. He becomes so sad that he tears the papers in front of him, breaks his pen and casts it in the corner and, utterly tired and disappointed, falls into a deep sleep on his bed.
This time, the writer dreams of the very girl the painter had dreamed of.
In his dream, the writer sees the girl in the far distance who in the fanciful world of dreams, with the wind in her hair, walks slowly and rhythmically towards him. As she gets closer, she gains more color, and when she is near the artist, her beautiful face becomes visible in the pale light. The girl is so astonishingly beautiful and attractive that the writer is dazzled by her face and unable to think of anything else.
After a while, the girl stands in front of the writer and breaks the silence with her lovely voice echoing in the world of the dream: “I am the most beautiful face in the world. When I heard that you have completely given up on finishing your story, I decided to come to tell you a truth. A truth you might not welcome. But I don’t know if you’re ready to hear it or not?
The writer, who was lost in the girl’s beautiful face, suddenly regains his consciousness by this question and, after a short pause, repeats the girl’s question in his mind, and, in a rush, answers: “Yes. Tell me. I am listening.”
The girl asks the writer: “Do you promise to believe what I tell you?” The bewildered writer answers: “Yes. I promise.” The girl says: “I want to tell you that you shouldn’t worry about finishing your story because you are yourself a fictional character created by another writer who is now writing your story.”
The writer is at first a little shocked by her words, but, after some pondering, collects himself and says with a sneer: “Very funny! You really expect me to believe this?”
The girl smiles gently and calmly replies: “Yes believe it. In fact, do you want to know who has created your character and is writing your story?”
The writer is suddenly agitated. He swallows with a dry throat, and very carefully asks: “Who?”
After a short pause the girl replies: “The painter. The very painter you believed you had created up till now. If fact, he is your creator.”
The writer is completely baffled by these words and, with a fearful shiver in his voice, tells the girl: “No! That’s not true. I am dreaming.” The girl immediately replies: “No! It is the truth. You are not dreaming. It is the painter who is dreaming.”
More bewildered than before and panting loudly, he turns a face full of pleading to the girl. The girl says: “Let me explain it for you clearly,” and continues that the painter wanted to draw the most beautiful face in the world, but after much trying was not successful. Exhausted, he fell asleep and dreamed that:
One day a writer who had written many books but didn’t have many fans and few people had bought and read his books, is suddenly possessed by a strange feeling and begins to hate himself and all the books he has written up to that day. Then he reaches a big decision in his life and decides to write…
The writer all in a rage shouts: “Stop! Not another word!” But the girl continues: “The painter, after having this dream, wakes up in amazement, and the more he thinks about it, the more confused he becomes, and loses himself between the realms of reality and fantasy, and decides to write everything that happens...
The writer suddenly wakes up in amazement and becomes so confused that he does not understand whether the painter is real and dreaming the writer, or the writer is real and dreaming the painter. The more the writer thinks, the more confused he becomes, and loses himself between the realms of reality and fantasy, and decides to write everything that happens
