My dog had to be put down today

I've mentioned it before, but I had a dog named Maya, who's over ten years old now and has had diabetes for about the last two. She was really struggling these last couple years, but we kept her going by giving her insulin with her meals. Every now and then she'd have issues, but she recovered in the end.

Last night, she had a serious episode where she lost almost all sensory function, and couldn't even lift herself up off the ground. My dad and I drove her to a vet ER, and while there she seemed to cool off a little. We were given some medicine, and took her back home. This morning, she had regressed, and was clearly in a lot of pain. She was delirious, she still couldn't get up, and ended up wetting herself. We eventually made the decision to have her euthanized because she was getting pretty old, and with her diabetes as intense as it was it was astounding she had even made it this far. We loaded her into the car, and went back to the vet. My dad and I watched her go.

It all happened pretty fast, and I guess I'm still kind of in a daze about it. This time yesterday, she seemed her usual self, and now she's gone. I knew this day would come eventually, though.

I felt pretty bad earlier, but right now I think I'm doing okay. I figured I'd make a thread about this.

Sorry to hear about that. I'm sure it's tough. But you did your best to take care of her, and hopefully knowing that will help you to feel better about your role in what happened.

We've had to put down two cats that were with us for 18 and 16 years respectively. I understand the feeling, especially the "wait they're not here anymore" one. Idk if it makes you sadder, but I try to remember them as they were younger and happier and full of life and energy. Also, I'm sure Maya knew you were doing your best to help her until the very end. You've put her out of any extended misery. Dogs can tell when someone is being kind to them, and after 10 years, I'm sure she knew without a doubt that you loved her.

Sorry to hear, Val. I remember having to put our dog down when I was a little kid. It took a bit to get used to him not being there, so I feel for you.

Our dog passed about a year ago, so I definitely know what it's like to lose a pet. I've always wondered whether it's better to put a suffering dog out of his or her misery or to let her live out her natural life. Though judging by your story it sounds like she was going to pass in a few days. I'm so sorry for your loss. -CSM
