Old VGF. (News Forum, reviews, etc.)
It just feels like a million years ago, but I still miss the old VGF. Call it what you want, the old UBB had a cleaner, more compact look; but there was more to it than that.
The News Forum, with its non-automated news posts, Bolt, and the debates it had put to shame the PP&R flaming and Shanebot junk. The old Gunjin buzzed with activity, and little of it was bickering or godmodding. NC was alive with Jay's comix; Nintendoland actually had something to do with us and had monthly DeathMatches, and the Liedholms even posted here.
The Misc. Forum had the header thing, and Tunbs posting there with his amusing replies; there was sort of a happiness then that is gone now, dead and empty. The main site was a real site, with reviews and life. It had staff members who also posted on the forums, and a lot more of them than today.
Fewer forums existed and those which did were variously pruned or ensured to be in decent condition; no zombie forums were allowed back then. There were also many tens to even hundreds of more users, and they were fairly active.
There was a wide and vibrant, shining community. Much was possible, and much was done. It was sort of a Mecca for discussion.
But, alas... it is gone forever. Most of the members here joined after it died (primarily 2005 or later) and those who were there are too few in number to recapture it. UBB became untenable due to idiotic management by the people who made the software; the dot-com bust led to the firing of all the staff who didn't feel like doing it for free.
Jay went to College; the Liedholms vanished for years, then later gave away control of Nintendoland to punk children who didn't understand the old site and just paved it over with a generiblog format that basically killed everything (including that site TML slaved on, it's gone now too.) The Gunjin greats by and large left; the remnants slave away at something which has nothing to do with what the place was founded on.
The snarky ones are gone; WEAPON, Tritoch and co. are gone, and Lurch only posts occasionally. The big posters such as Golem and Kirbyking also went out to lunch. Others, like Dopefish, split off and made their own communities. The News Forum was mysteriously combined into Misc...
...Then both the old Misc and News forum were obliterated and replaced with a limp-wristed general forum.
Ah well. I guess I should stop thinking about it so much. It was silly to think it'd last at all; it was all sort of a dot-com boom thing, anyway...
*Shrugs and trudges on in the gray, dreary VGF of today, wandering by the smashed wreckage of the News Forum, covered in tabloid newspapers thrown everywhere by Shanebot*

I'm using a lot of French words, for some reason.
I don't miss the old VGF in an of itself, but the milieu in which it sits in. One thing that can't be reproduced is the naivete that I had (buckets more than I had now), as well as the web as it was before Web 2.0.
I miss it, but I don't yearn for it. It's something that's come and gone, and now we have this.

OH NO EVRYBODY METAL MAN IS ON ANOTHER NOSTALGIA TRIP RANT
HOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLDD OOOOOOONNNNN

Seriously I've always been behind on tech, I didn't even know anything about computers or net til a decent few years after the web 2.0 thing, let alone VGF. So I don't really have anything important to say on this matter. In fact this entire post is pointless and should not exist. It is causing me to ramble on and on and on actually. It is rather interesting how that happens...

Ah, I remember the epic flame wars where Mike Peters took on 20 people at once over Zelda. Those were messed up times.

I remember him. He was some weird multi-forum troll who stretched onto wikipedia, met his match there, and imploded.

This; it applied to VGf, as the downturn in online ads made VGF unable to afford its staff and implode.
