Lost some irreplacable files.

I like to think of myself as a safe person. I look both ways when crossing the road. I don't mess around with addictive substances. I haven't watched a Seltzer and Friedberg movie since that first terrible one. And if there's something on my computer or laptop that's important, I back it up. If I think there's a good chance I may lose it.

Sometimes, I like to organize my files by putting them in folders with appropriate names. As I have been doing recently, in the last week or so of nerdwork. So here I am with a bunch of files I haven't organized in a few days, and I decide to put them in their appropriate folder, and I do.

Or so I think.

Apparently, the program I was using at the time created a temp folder with a name very similar to the folder I put the files in. And on reflex, without thinking twice, like some kind of robot, I moved the files into the temp folder.

Cut to a bit later, I find that I need to access said files, and to my surprise, they aren't in the right folder, with all the older files. I backtrack, and then I notice the temp folder. I check it. It's empty.

The folder had been deleted and replaced while I was using the program. All the files I had accidentally placed in there were gone, and it was impossible to get them back.

So after I pass through the five stages of grief (shock, enraged babbling, 40 minutes of uncontrollable sobbing, acceptance, and then more uncontrollable sobbing), I shut off my computer and curse my luck. Maybe next time I should look twice before I rearrange my files.

Maybe I should stop organizing my files at all.

Maybe I should just keep a second computer hooked up to my laptop that backs up the entire hard drive every second. Maybe that would be sufficient.

Or maybe I'll need a third computer hooked up to the second computer, JUST TO MAKE DAMN SURE THAT'S BEEN BACKED UP IS DOUBLE BACKED UP TWICE AGAIN

WOULD THAT BE ADEQUATE? WOULD I BE ABLE TO GET THINGS DONE THAT WAY YOU SICK BASTARD TECHNOLOGY?

YOU MANIACS

YOU DELETED IT ALL UP

AHH DAMN YOU ALL

DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL

I can sympathize...

I lost a bunch of files I forgot to back up a few weeks ago. It was some billboard designs, magazine advertisements, and posters I designed for class... and then I couldn't put them in my portfolio.

I back things up pretty often, but not often enough obviously.

:( Sorry Val, I hope you can get it sorted out.

Last time my computer crashed, the only files I lost were some old school pictures and a big folder full of unpleasant memories. So it actually all worked out, because I was going to destroy those pictures anyway. It's nice to have unintentionally backed up all of my files through various sources (all of my lyrics, for example, were online at the time, though none of my more recent output has been put up).
