There's also a mind-bending philosophical argument over what is important to everyone and what isn't (and what defines 'universal importance', if it even exists), but even I won't touch that one!
*Waits for argument to resume instead*

[strike]blargh[/strike]
Mostly it was just a contextual error on my part. I tried to edit it into my post, b ut my internet cut off for some reason and I had to wait until now.
But anyway, religion is no doubt of great importance to all of human history, and what I'm getting at is a simple case of cause and effect. Without the existence of some of today's religeons, chances are that at least one of her friends lives would've been effected in some way causing her to not become friends with them. So it technically is of importance to someone's friendships.
That said, I wasn't saying that one's religion necisarilly had to be important in the personal selecting of one's friends so much as I was saying that different religeons' impacts on history would effect it to the point that I wouldn't call it petty in any part of life.
But whatever, this small mess was prolly my mistake.
Whether or not it was, I'm still trying to stop posting here, in this topic, as it's beginning to have physical reprecussions...

Guild, there's no argument in that. You're the one contradicting yourself. I never said I believe everyone has a right to their opinion.Vgfian wrote:opinions, etc
Rights are idealistic concepts which are defined by your mind. You perceive them through communication, be it verbal or action. I could just as easily kill you for your opinion, and even while I may be captured by authorities, who was there to stop me from attempting this? No, those are just words, they are concepts that you can and I believe should support, but that is all.
If it is my opinion that you should not have opinions, what can freedom of speech do? We can both verbalize this. I cannot force you to not have an opinion. The freedom of speech is a legal concept with legal precedence only; unless there is legal repercussion for simply the act of expressing, the law has no bearing on this matter. That law, even in itself, is manmade and another concept.
There is no legal precedence forbidding attempts to convince another of your opinion. There is no legal precedence to suggest that you have freedom of speech to anyone you want. Do you get that? You can say whatever you want, but it is not necessarily to whomever you want. There is no guarantee you may speak to anyone you want to. If they don't want to hear it because you have offended them, you do not have a right to speak to them in particular.
Imagine a world where that does apply. Restraining orders are a legal protection against unwanted harassment. Shall we just get rid of those, because they interfere with your highly misinformed version of freedom of speech?
And in my opinion, religion is a universally petty method to justify the transgressions of the human race. In my opinion, religion has little overall importance as the human race has little overall importance. In my opinion, importance is another concept which has been assigned a name by the race that you are trying to use to justify it. You believe humans and their languages and conflicts are universally important? I do not. Disprove me.

The importance argument is Guild mistaking one context of use for an unrelated context of use. The weather, for instance, could play an important role in the shaping of a rock. Keyword being shaping; it is a part of the forming process. The rock itself does not consider the weather important, the rock itself does not need to consider the weather. The weather is unimportant to the rock, but not the process of the rock's formation. The process of the rock's formation could be important to the rock, but it is not. The rock does not lend importance to things. It is a rock.
I simply chose to suggest an alternate trump: The rock is unimportant.
