People who can't appreciate Janis Joplin's voice
You know, not every voice has to sound silky smooth like the bull**** singers out today.
Clarification: This is a thread about close-minded writing off of something without giving it a chance.

I'm not quite following.Deku Trii wrote:It did, actually.
This topic really isn't about music or even art really so much as it is about close-mindedness in general. I feel like I had about 1000 different situations today where someone was like "that's different, therefore I refuse to try to understand it."

I guess I figured it was something like that.
Clarifying what I meant by the original topic: I can respect not liking Janis Joplin or Patti Smith or Joanna Newsom, for example. For someone to write it off as being objectively bad simply because the style is not what they're used to is just close-minded and bothers me. But it's all subjective... to a certain point. I got a bit carried away with being irked when I originally posted the topic.

I don't necessarily agree. Style is the best reason not to like something.
For instance, while I can respect the decision to stylize the models of World of Warcraft, I do not like the stylistic decisions in respect to a subscription model game. I do not want to pay for a game repeatedly for a limited set of stylized options. I would rather import my own models and play in my own stylized fashion as I used to back during the heydays of Quake 3. Hence, I feel the style is inappropriate for the market. The gameplay is a limiting enough set, basically a very sparse version of the Ultima Online featureset, or like a pumped up Diablo - let me do it in my own style and I can forgive those shortcomings.
Or, alternatively, consider the action-movie shakycam. Stylistically, I think it's good for close cuts and realism from the perspective of the actor. It worked perfectly in Cloverfield. I think it's an inappropriate choice in the Bourne series, though. The first movie was much more enjoyable when the camera was intentionally smooth, the combat was impressive yet realistic and that was something you could see. Shakycam takes away from all the impressive angles and draws attention to the camera, which breaks up suspension of disbelief by making the audience aware of the camera technique.

I actually quite agree with your examples, though for the most part I really do detest shaky-cam in action sequences, but I have seen neither Cloverfield nor the Bourne series to comment.
The style needs to be appropriate for what it's doing. I think, generally, most styles can be pulled off well, so long as it's used in the correct situation. Like in my example, Janis Joplin's super raspy voice is perfectly appropriate for the music she's making.
My problem is when people are so used to things being one way - i.e., singing always being completely slick and smooth - that when they encounter something that isn't the status quo, they don't give it a chance. It's one thing to give something a chance and say, "well, I didn't like it because of such and such reason," but it's another thing completely to be like, "SINGIN HAZ 2 B SMOOVE, NERP."
