The 35 Best Games Of All Time

#1

Post by I REALLY HATE POKEMON! » Tue Aug 13, 2024 6:53 pm

https://screenrant.com/best-video-games ... me-ranked/

I stumbled across this list and it stood out to me because of the seemingly random number of games included. I usually post the entire article's contents but I figured just the list of games may suffice:

35. The Oregon Trail
34. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
33. Halo 3
32. Street Fighter II (SNES)
31. Silent Hill 2
30. GoldenEye 007
29. God of War
28. Resident Evil 4
27. Bioshock
26. The Last of Us
25. League of Legends
24. Doom
23. Persona 5 Royal
22. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
21. Dark Souls
20. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
19. Tetris
18. Super Metroid
17. Slay the Spire
16. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
15. Pokemon Red & Blue
14. Super Mario World
13. Super Mario Bros.
12. World of Warcraft
11. Metal Gear Solid
10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
9. Dragon Quest 11: Echoes Of An Elusive Age
8. Baldur's Gate 3
7. Fallout: New Vegas
6. Stardew Valley
5. Final Fantasy VII
4. Red Dead Redemption 2
3. Minecraft
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
1. Elden Ring

This lost is... interesting. I can't see any rhyme or reason. I know there's no way to really be entirely objective with these and with set criteria, but for example, it's just odd to have Mario 1 & World, but not 3 or SM64. It isn't like they limited entries to one per series, so we're those just that much better or more important than the rest? I don't think that'd be a very easy argument to make,. especially regarding SM64. It'd make more sense to have just one 2D and one 3D entry, if anything.

Anyway, feel free to share your thoughts on it. Personally it's not the worst list I've ever seen, most of these are pretty safe and popular choices overall, despite some odd picks.

I'm sure I'm not the most well-versed anymore, but I've only played 7 of those, most a long time ago.

Which 7? I've played about half of the list myself.

I would absolutely not put the N64 iteration of 'Goldeneye' on a current-day "Best Of" list. Only reason I've played 'Goldeneye' in the past twenty-five-odd years is that they fixed the goofy controls for the 'Rare Replay' release by converting it to twin-stick, like they did with 'Perfect Dark' back in the XBLA days.

Oh, and 'Oregon Trail' is barely a game. If 'Oregon Trail' is your favourite game, your favourite ice cream flavour is probably 'plain'. Not 'vanilla', just 'plain'.

Basically all the old ones. Street Fighter II, Tetris, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros, Ocarina of Time. The only newer one is Stardew Valley. I played one run in Slay the Spire or about half an hour, which I suppose I might try again at some point. Haven't played Final Fantasy VII yet but would. I'll get Red Dead Redemption 2 eventually. Skyrim has been on my wishlist for several years, but I have not felt compelled enough to buy, even at 83% off.

Yeah, Goldeneye gets a bit too much credit. It wasn't the first first-person shooter, not even on consoles, and doesn't hold up that well, so the only place it belongs is on a list of best N64 shooters (and it's not even the best there).

Oregon Trail is a little tough to call. I think it's historic (no pun intended), but the original absolutely doesn't hold up at all. Plus the subject matter really is dry. Organ Trail, on the other hand, is a blast, zombies make everything better.

I figured it'd be among those for the most part, but I'm a little surprised you haven't played Oregon Trail. It seems like something you might be into.

Skyrim is pretty dang fun, especially if you haven't played many games like it. Red Dead Redemption 2 I haven't played, but it's definitely not the kind of thing I'm into, the writing is pretty bad from what I saw, but the novelty of the wild west setting is unique, you don't see it much.

If I had to suggest one game from the list, it'd be Metal Gear Solid. It was revolutionary and holds up well, despite the remake being better imo.

Well, just putting 'Oregon Trail' is stupid anyway, because there's a bunch of different games by that name, and they're all totally different one from another. I assume they mean the ancient garbagey Apple IIE version that everyone from my generation played in elementary school, but I also played shareware versions of it on Commodore 64 and Mac, and now there's a new version on the Switch? Probably others?

If people like 'Oregon Trail' that much, they can damn well have it. Give me 'Number Munchers' or 'Museum Madness' or a Carmen Sandiego game any day of the week.

I never played computer games until the late 90s except occasionally at my uncle's house. I didn't really know anyone else with a computer and never had one myself either, though there were a few kids at school who were into them. We just had a word processor, and even that was a pretty novel concept.

I like those historical settings, though I'm sure I wouldn't want to experience them for long, but I find them interesting. Wild west isn't featured very often, though it seems like a smart vehicle for storytelling and certain activities like shooting and horses. The original RDR was probably my favorite PS3 game.

I own a couple of the MGS games but never played them. Never been big on stealth. I played the NES game, which was okay.

The Old West is a good evocative setting for games. Lends itself well to FPSes and open-world stuff. The Red Deads and 'Outlaws' are terrific, and even dumb things like 'GUN' and 'Call of Juarez' have their goofy charms.

Fun fact-----‐-----I once got into a fistfight with my cousin because I shot too many animals in 'Oregon Trail'. Bad to the bone, I am. Haha
