What are the hardest games you've ever played?

What made them so difficult?
Would you try any of them again?
When was the last time you played any?

Did you play any of the following?
Dark Souls
Ninja Gaiden
Contra
Mega Man 9
Flywrench
1001 Spikes
Dota 2
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Ghosts 'n Goblins

Do you agree with this list of hard games?

(I never got through much of Ghosts 'n Goblins and never will go back to it. :p)

I'd say '1001 Spikes' is way, way harder than 'Contra'. I've beaten 'Contra' (without the Konami code). I've gotten about two-thirds through NES 'Ninja Gaiden', for that matter. Comparatively, I've barely gotten anywhere in '1001 Spikes'.

I've played Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden, Dota 2 and Mega Man 9.

I've beaten the first Dark Souls, almost beaten Dark Souls 2, and got a quarter to a third of the way (I think) through Dark Souls 3.

And I think this list is missing a few games. You can't talk about hard games without bringing up Castlevania or Battletoads.

I played Ninja Gaiden. I don't recall how far I got in it or it being considered a hard game at the time.

I have played through Zelda II multiple times. I don't remember it being too hard. The only thing is I would leave the game on with something on one of the buttons because the final boss or something was annoying.

Played at least part of The Lost Levels as part of Super Mario All-Stars but don't really remember it.

I got a decent ways into 1001 Spikes. I typically dislike the type of game it is (I lump it in with Super Meat Boy type stuff), but I found it addicting. Eventually I felt overwhelmed and put it down, but I still consider it good.

Anyway, most NES era games count for me. Even though there's some I like, I find the vast majority to be too difficult. I generally dislike trial-and-error game design, which is essentially what they all used to mask their short length.

SNES was much better in this regard but it was still a prominent design choice, sometimes just to combat rentals rather than being a necessity though.

Here's a few that usually come to mind from the SNES:

Hagane: The Final Conflict. It is unbearably difficult and complex. Even with liberal use of save states its fun is simply ruined by this. It's otherwise a very nice looking, sounding, and controlling game which makes the instant difficulty unfortunate.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors seemed impossible to me as a kid, and I doubt it'd be much easier now. It seemed like there were endless levels, and even the first one isn't exactly a cakewalk. The controls are a bit stiff and level design isn't the most fair, but it's really fun. It's like a more silly, arcade-like version of Resident Evil in a way.

Earthworm Jim (series). These are wacky and hilarious games, it's too bad they're so frustrating. Progress isn't always straightforward and the platforming is very demanding. There's also tough mini-games and combat is a bit spotty (especially since ammo is limited).

I'd probably play Zombies Ate My Neighbors if it got released on Switch. I could then maybe find somebody to play online with who is good enough to carry me through it.

I haven't really play EWJ or ZAMN in decades, but I discovered Hagane under a year ago, I think.

It's hard to say because sometimes there are games that are much harder because your a kid you know? I found the lion king game to be really difficult. Mega Man X4 was a pain in the butt. Playing the Legendary Campaign on Halo 3 by myself was rage inducing. Witcher 3 on Death March is pretty annoying in the first playthrough. It gradually gets easier as you master the game. The same goes with the new God of War. I found Kingdom Hearts on Proud mode to be like godlike difficult to beat. Especially the Pegasus Cup, the first Riku fight at Hollow Bastian and the maleficent fight. There are plenty of difficult fights in that where my face was red with anger.

It's a cliche answer but Dark Souls, for one. I think I started that game maybe 10 times before I was able to get even halfway through. I finally beat it back in the spring, but it took a friend of mine basically guiding me through most of it. Definitely worth it though.

Also, Halo 2 Co-op on Legendary. Still have never beaten it. I've tried playing through it with a few different friends and every time it ends with us getting pissed at each other and giving up because if one of you dies it sends you all the way back to the last checkpoint. Some day I'll finally beat that game, but it might be a while.

The vampire fight in Eternal Darkness is downright painful.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Didn't it get ported to everything this summer?

(*furious googling*)

Mega Man 9 and Zelda II aren't that hard. One of the hardest games I own is probably Ikaruga.

^ I think Mega Man 9 was fairly difficult but not hard enough for a list like this. As for Zelda II, I couldn't beat it so I'd say it's hard, but then again I just suck at both of the NES Zeldas.

Oh that's pretty neat, and unexpected. Unfortunate about the lack of online multiplayer though. Seems Capcom is one of the few who includes it in their classic rereleases, it really should be standard by now.

Maybe I just played MM9 pretty soon after having worked through the MM collection so I was in a good place to meet the challenge.

don't laugh but Double Dragon 2 took me off and on over 20 years to finally beat. With the same friend as the second player so that was an iconic moment personally
