Like, seriously, why did they do this? I can see no scenarios where it would be useful and as a copyeditor it is an absolute PITA to deal with. :banghead:

(Can you tell I should be working right now?)

First thing I do whenever I start a new document is turn that off.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

When I posted this thread, I had just finished dealing with a chapter where the author had the spacing on, but no line breaks, and I needed line breaks, so I had to turn the spacing off and figure out where all the line breaks were supposed to go. Ewwwwww.

Last semester I got 99% on two papers just because I forgot to turn this **** off. NEAR PERFECTION AND YOU RUINED IT, MICROSOFT

There's a difference between a paragraph and a line break, Nyan.

^Either way, why does it default to that? It's not the standard in most accepted writing formats.

What really pisses Val off is how the default font is always Times New Roman.

Ewwwww.

What's so new about Times New Roman anyway?

I mean it has "Times" and "Roman" in it. Can't be that new.

What really upsets ME is that, as of Vista, the default font is always Calibri.

Now that's something to say, "Ewwwww," about. The MLA and the Chicago Manual of Style insist on Times New Roman.

The worst part of all these bad default settings is that School Computers don't save your cookies, so you have to reset the settings if you ever want to use one.

You can turn that off somewhere in settings, I think.

How about the fact that I'm still not used to Word 2007's ribbon. Stupid ribbon.

Really...? That's kinda **** from your teachers tbh...

Yes, I know. The files I've been working with specify that there has to be a line break between paragraphs, which is why this is an especial pain in the arse.

YES SWEET JESUS Calibri and Cambria are the worst fonts ever invented. HELVETICA 4 LYFE

~

I've attempted to change my Normal template but it never actually saves, despite saying it does. If there's an option to turn off that spacing by default, I have yet to find it.

All of this crap can be specified in the Settings and then saved so that every document forever more into the future does it that way. Like seriously, I had forgotten that MSWord does that (I honestly had grown to the thought that only Wordpad does!).[DOUBLEPOST=1404202612,1404202577][/DOUBLEPOST]And also, if we're choosing fonts, Calibri, plox.

Thank the Powers that OpenOffice Writer has no such problem, because I would murder. :smirk:

Of course, I default to working in old school manuscript formatting with my paragraph settings (12pt Courier New, first line 2cm indented, double line space) and it feels weird to use anything else.

I recently did some minor line-editing for someone, and stars above, they had manually tabbed each new paragraph to indent. I shuddered when I realised. Actually, physically shuddered.
