So I just got Guild Wars 2. I manage to link my account to it and am trying to get it to work. However, when I tried to install the game...this happened:

IT downloaded about 101kb and then asked if I wanted to let the client make changes to my computer. yes, I do, then...nothing happens. It just crashes. Nothing works. I download the client from their website. Once again it downloads files...then refuses to install.

The next day, I try and now it says "Download failed - check your internet connection and try again". What? My internet connection's wrong? That's strange...i can connect to other games and the internet just fine. I talk to ANet via email and they haven't gotten back to me. If anything they're probably as clueless as I am. What the heck, GW2?!

does it hate my OS because I'm stuck with Vista?

Couldn't you just ask about it on their forums or something?

Right click the installer -> click Run as Administrator

If that doesn't work, try creating permissions in Windows Firewall, found under the Control Panel

A more likely solution: disable UAC for the installation. In the search box, which is located in the Start menu, type UAC and a link to "Change User Account Control Settings" should appear in the search results box - click it. This brings up a slider - drop it down to the lowest notch. Remember to set it back to its original state after installing GW2, with your default probably being second notch from the top, before you do anything else on your computer.

Well now I feel like an idiot cause that helped.

Still, this tendency to have games that derp with the OS or OSes that derp with games (at least tell me if you're blocking something Windows!) does get very very annoying.

Yeah GW2 have a lot of problems, my computer crashes so bad it just turns itself off for some reason and the only explanation i have is that it is a Asus G73 series laptop as many more people with this type of computer have the same problem.

It might have been trying to use Bittorrent as a transfer mechanism (like the Blizzard updater does)

There are so many security levels in recent Windows, some of which crossover, so it's not as easy to tell what's conflicting with what. The permission-to-change-settings dialogue is the UAC, but it's equally likely Windows had blocked a number of other functions based on it being a downloader and not a simple installer.

I think UAC was intentionally named as a reference to the Union Aerospace Corporation in Doom, btw. Dropping UAC security levels on Vista or 7 can be a lot like opening a gate to hell.
