I've made some goofy YouTube videos on my computer. They are slideshow & animation-based because I don't normally have a camera available to me.
When I have been able to check out camcorders, I have to do the editing on Macs because the camcorders only have firewire hookups, & my computer doesn't have a firewire port.
I recently made a couple of short live videos that I want to put on a DVD with some of my slideshow videos, so I needed to find a way to upload the tape to my laptop.

I had to get super-special permission to rent out the one USB-capable camcorder they have; which was actually taken OUT of circulation. :smashhead:
I get it back to the dorm, I look up & download & install the driver, I go digging online for a manual to tune the camera because ITS apparently lost all their manuals because they don't pack them in with the cameras. I find out that USB uploading for this model of HandyCam is not supported at all on Vista, Windows 7, or even some versions of XP. :smashhead:

WHY DID I EVEN NEED A DRIVER IN THE FIRST PLACE? I USE A VAIO. THESE ARE BOTH SONY PRODUCTS. HELL, THE VAIO IS A MEDIA COMPUTER, WHY IS IT SO FREAKING HARD TO SEND VIDEO INTO IT JUST BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ONE PARTICULAR TYPE OF LINK? NOTHING ABOUT THIS SITUATION MAKES ANY EFFING SENSE. :smashhead:

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

If it makes you feel any better, USB 3.0 is out now, which makes firewire completely obsolete.

Okay, I bit the bullet & just went to our all-Mac video lab again. Now I'm looking for a way to convert MOV to AVI. Anybody?

Blender + ffdshow is quite a good cross-platform video editing solution. Just ignore the 3D editing bits of the application and go to the 'Sequencer' pane arrangement.

Grazie, both of you. :)

Also worth noting: Our ITS guys didn't even have an iLink cable. As in, the kind of cable that Sony includes with their camcorders & that would've allowed me to bypass all of this USB-vs-Firewire nonsense in the first place. I swear, I think they're intentionally throwing out any accessories that would allow PC-users to edit without the precious Mac lab.
