People who hate video games

#1

Post by ScottyMcGee » Sun Sep 09, 2012 10:48 pm

Have you ever met or come across people like this? I don't mean someone who's just like, "Oh, I don't play many video games" but people who are seriously like, "Video games are the bane of society" or "Video games are for morons?"

Just their stubbornness and ignorance makes me want to punch their face. Or sometimes it's just this high-horse feeling they give off by implying, "I'm successful and don't waste my time with silly things like that."

There was this girl I met in one of my classes who sat next to me in my junior year of college. She had a ****ing problem with everything. She reminded me of Holden Caufield. When I referenced video games, she was like, "Ugh, they are the bane of society" or something like that. Once and I while, I would just be so frustrated with her negativity that I just wanted to say, "What the f*** is your problem?!"

ALSO I vaguely remember years ago, (like I must have been in middle school or something - the Game Boy Color was still the thing), I was playing Game Boy at a restaurant. A guy in his thirties was with his wife at another table, and he glanced over at me and chuckled muttering something to his wife like, "Stupid games kids play now--" Something along those lines. I glared at the corner of my eye.

You know what bugs me? Every time some axe murderer makes the news, you get these craaaaazy people that want to blame it on video games. No. There was a psychological problem. It's not like some normal kid picked up GTA or whatever and decided OH HEY I'M GOING TO GO KILL PEOPLE. That's ridiculous. That doesn't happen.

oh and their argument is usually 100% irrelevant anyway and they just want to spout hatred for no reason.

There's no point in caring about what they think and letting it get under your skin.

People who hate video games suck but are likely just ignorant to their badassery. Somewhere along the line they developed an opinion that they stuck to. Should they have an open mind and try a variety of games, surely they'd change their views.

Now, what bugs me is the type of person who may actually play some games some times but then criticizes the ones you play which tend to actually be as good or better than their choice. Also, they may have an issue with how often or how long you play, or bring you down for how seriously you take your gaming.

I wish people would actually know their **** before they go off.

^ I see that as backwards. It's okay for a person to have taste in a medium, although not cool for them to inflict their stylistic preferences upon others. People who dismiss an entire method of delivery are the lowest form of haters, though.

I tend to assume people who cannot enjoy games are often simply incapable of playing them confidently and too insecure to admit that entertainment which must be won its way through cannot be easily accessed by them. They take the reservation of narrative in games to be a personal affront, and dismiss the narrative content which they cannot obtain because they would otherwise be forced to internally admit that they are missing something.

Those same people will belittle most anything with a barrier to entry. They connect interests to social status, especially as social status is a preferential matter and they themselves will often have few redeeming talents worth championing.

i really wish that i could post on something ellse than my phone....

I see this of a youth thing similar to the rockin fifties or the flowerpowered sixties, its kind of a long shot maybe but this is how i see it, there will always be those people that goes that thing is the bane of the youth today (rock n roll, etc) and tryong to make it forbidden.

The phone is hatd to type with so i summarise it like this:

"Videogames are bad for you, that is what thwy said about rock n roll" Shiguero Myamoto

Freaking phone spell the letters i press damnit!

And yet some of the crap those guys do is even stupider than video games. But what also pisses me off is the people who talk about video games to NO END. I'm not talking about the internet, I'm talking about when your really into doing something, and suddenly they rush over to you and blurt in your ear that they had just gotten one of the hardest achievements on some Xbox game.

But that's for another topic. Why are they saying video games are killing society and ruining children's brains when there's plenty of other things they could worry about.

Such as DRUGS?

I agree. It seems more like a "I don't understand what this is so I automatically hate it" thing. They've done studies that -prove- there is no correlation between video games and real world violence.

On the same token, however, they did prove that video game violence increases violence in small children, who are prone to imitate everything they see.

I'd prefer it if the topic title were something like "Close-minded people," because that's really what the issue is.

Yeah, if you let your five-year-old play GTA and they turn out to be really effed up because of it, that's just bad parenting.

Which starts me on my whole censorship spiel: It's not the government's job to watch your kids; it's your job. KNOW WHAT THEY'RE GETTING INTO AAAA THAT'S WHAT MY PARENTS DID AND I TURNED OUT PRETTY FAN FREAKING TASTIC HUH!?

Which is why I only tune into the Discovery channel.

As opposed to other more banal forms of materialistic entertainment, like most television.

Maybe he just didn't like the game you were playing and would've preferred you were playing Tetris or something.

I really don't hear much about people outright hating video games nowadays. I suppose the booming casual market is at least contributing to that factor.

We could go back to old fashioned forms of fun from a more innocent time. Like attending public executions, or golf.

I'd have to make a game out of it.

For the executions, you get points if you get blood spatter. There's not that much you can do with golf, though! :3

Just give it time.

About 20 years later, we'll be scapegoating that generation's childhood violence on the new media. I wonder why the fingers aren't being pointed at TV and devlish rock and roll anymore like they were when the baby boomers were kids?

Time was when a man would pay money to see a feller punch another feller until one of 'em wadn't standin' no more, and maybe never stood agin. Kids these days jus' don't have any values, 's what I'm sayin'. They ain't learned nothin' either, what with them low-barrier edjications.

Video games are very popular and most of the like it, but there are some who don't like it. I think they don't know good things about video games. I would like to share some advantages of video games. These are:
1 Helps in boosting IQ
2 Enhance problem solving skill
3 Increase critical thinking
4 Some video games act as a motivator
But one should not spend too much time on video games.
