As a nine-year-old boy (in the first season) attending high school, he tries to fit into a world full of more socially normal people, including his own family and friends, who do not quite understand how to deal with his unique intellectual capabilities and social ineptitude. At age 11, Sheldon graduates high school and begins attending the fictional university East Texas Tech full time.
In the series premiere, adult Sheldon states "nobody I knew in East Texas in 1989 cared about Newtonian physics". Several other episodes make spoken or written references to, or reference historic or pop cultural events from 1990 and 1991. Episode eighteen from season five, where it is stated that Isaac Asimov has passed away, takes place in 1992.
