Watched it several times, read the manga, and saw the two animated films (as well as the first live action movie).
My favorite episode is probably the second to last one. Badass internal monologue, impressive visuals, the cliffhanger ending, it's got everything.
I think it's the best anime of its kind, it's really close to actually being my favorite overall. It's definitely top 3 at least. There's not one bad aspect of it, but it does admittedly get a little weaker in the second half. I'm not a fan of Near.
I'd watch it again, especially if there's ever a sequel. I like rewatching things before seeing the new stuff sometimes.

This is the anime that got me into anime. What hooked me was that when Light Yagami got his hands on the Death Note and he didn't do what I expected, which was to wrestle with the decision of whether to use it at all, start slow, and gradually have the power corrupt him. When the show instead immediately had him get to work dealing out judgement and reshaping the world, I trusted that the writing would be interesting and avoid being obvious. Then you get L, tasked with the impossible job of finding the guy, and he immediately makes meaningful progress at it. I was totally sold.
The first half is amazing. The metaphorical chess game between Light and L is all I could ask for. Once the show stops being about that, it's not as great, but I'm not going to complain too much about that.
I'd enjoy giving it another watch, but my time is kinda precious these days.

^ I like that they at least humanize Light by having him strongly contemplate the morality of his actions, but very briefly only in like a flashback type of scene. After he tests the book and confirms that it's real he staggers down an alley vomiting and considers discarding "the evil thing". I like that scene a lot, and it would've been a bit more interesting if he maintained that reluctance to use his abilities.
I think the creators thought so too, and that's basically how Mirai from Platinum End behaves, like a much more restrained Light.
