Spongebob spinoff starring Patrick (Yes, really).

Because Nickelodeon hasn't ruined Hillenburg's legacy enough.

https://deadline.com/2020/08/spongebob- ... 203006633/

I don't like this for 2 reasons:

1. Giving the comic relief character his/her own show almost never goes well.

2. Why use Patrick for a talk show? Wouldn't Squidward be a better fit?

Viacom wasted no time pissing on Hillenberg's wishes.

They really did wait for Hillenburg to die to make a bunch of spinoffs.

Nickelodeon are vultures.

Planet Sheen only made it 1 season. Fingers crossed here.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

As others have said, this feels enormously disrespectful since the creator did not want any spinoffs.

It looks like Spongebob is going down the same road as Rugrats; getting a bunch of spinoffs nobody wanted so Nickelodeon can beat the dead horse even more.

Because why bother greenlighting a new original show when we can ride off of brand name recognition and nostalgia? Sure there may be many original IPs just waiting to receive attention (After all Snizz and Fondue almost became a nicktoon but lost out to this spongy tumour) but nah. Gotta have that brand name recognition!

Anyway, be sure to tune into Viacom's new animation block on Comedy Central featuring 90s nostalgia such as Ren and Stimpy: We don't have John K again. (We promise!), Beavis and Butthead try again to be relevant after South Park, and the twenty something season of South Park and its ages-like-milk humour. But don't worry, we have some 2000s nostalgia for you - Jodie: Spinoff Squared!
...Pleeeeeeease turn off netflix and your streaming apps people? ; 3; our Advertisers want you to watch their ****....

Viacom loooves their zombie franchises. Surprised they sold Neopets...

Does anyone here still actually watch Spongebob enough to actually be upset about this?

it's been like 15 years. Really it's the kids who watch it now who will most likely enjoy the spin-off.

Hillenburg might not have wanted spin-offs but you're literally talking about a show that makes so much money through toys and video games etc. It's bigger than his vision ever was for a simple TV show. It's a show that could have had spin-offs years ago. Possibly successful ones. Personal vanity vs a bunch of little kids getting hyped up to watch a Patrick star TV show. Don't see anything wrong with that. Even if it is a money grab by Nickelodeon.

If he felt that strongly about it he should have never seeded the rights to the show to get it made in the first place. He said, "oh that's just what you do when the people who you pitch the idea to are spending money to make the show." While that's partially true if you can manage to produce a few episodes to maintain control of your vision in the beginning that can pay off in a major way. Sounds like he was just bitter af that he had to seed those rights to get it made. That's showbiz though.

I care about kids not being shoveled crap, regardless of whether I watch the crap.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Spongebob still gets high ratings, so I would say yes.

lol bro spongebob is shoveled crap already. it's just a stinkin cartoon. it's been the show with zero educational value since day one.

Not hard considering Nickelodeon airs it like, 16-20 hours a day.

Hardly would call myself anti-animation considering i watch just as much cartoons if not more as you guys. I may have had a dismissing tone when I called it crap but i'd love to see the examples of how it isn't. When i said, "does anyone here actually still watch Spongebob enough to actually be upset about this?" I meant here as in VGF. Never said anything about it's ratings.

Hello, believer of the Animation Age Ghetto.
It's actually laughable also that 65% of the responses to arguments for or against anything on this site is just ad hominem dribble. To say something has no educational value which (it doesn't) doesn't mean I've never watched Spongebob or enjoy Spongebob. It's calling it what it is. Seeing as it airs on Nickelodeon which does try to throw in a little education into the mix while remaining entertainment, it's not a stretch of the imagination to say it's got zero educational value.

Anchor arms, Sandy going back to Texas, Rock bottom, Band geeks. I love Spongebob. Do i think it is shoveled crap? Of course. Do i watch it still? Maybe if I've had a few and want a laugh. Would i recommend my 3 year old watch it over Dora the Explorer? No.

And if your argument is you don't want kids to be subjected to a terrible spin-off, ask yourself this question. How could they possibly make a Spongebob show that kids wouldn't love with arguably the most visible character in the series? Life moves on with people making new ideas. It's not personally designed around sentiment and vanity.

That's not an ad hominem. You presented "educational programming" & "shoveled crap" as the only options for a cartoon to be. That indicates a bias in your viewpoint against any other possibilities.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Also odd how you dismiss apprehension as "It's just a cartoon".

Which implies that you believe cartoons shouldn't have standards or are some kind of inferior product. How would you like it if you expressed apprehension over something and we dismissed it as "It's just a video game/book."

For a lot of people, Spongebob isn't "just a cartoon". It's something they grew up with.
