While drama and scandal unfolded behind the scenes at America’s Got Talent this week — with ousted former judge Gabrielle Union formally filing a discrimination complaint against NBC, Fremantle, and Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment, and current host Terry Crews coming under fire for his “black supremacy” tweet — the show continued apace Tuesday, attempting to bring viewers some distracting feel-good content. Unfortunately, this evening it was judge Heidi Klum’s turn to generate controversy, when she rudely hit her red X button during plus-sized contestant Amanda LaCount’s audition.

Nineteen-year-old dancer, model, choreographer, singer, actress, and activist Amanda has a big online fanbase — 260,000 followers alone on Instagram, where she frequently posts clips of her dazzling, frenetically paced hip-hop routines. She has performed in Katy Perry and Walk the Moon music videos, on Dancing With the Stars and The Voice, in Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty show at New York Fashion Week, at Coachella with Lizzo, and even in her own national dance tour "Amanda LaCount Live,” and she has also spearheaded a campaign, #breakingthestereotype, to inspire people of all shapes and sizes to pursue dance. So when size 2 supermodel Heidi buzzed Amanda before she’d even finished her performance to Todrick Hall’s “Nails Hair Hips Heels,” fans on Twitter were not happy.

Another judge, Howie Mandel, also caught some Twitter flak for initially voting no for Amanda (he praised the dancer’s vivacious spirit, but argued that he couldn’t see her winning AGT). However, in the end, the roaring audience convinced Howie (but not Heidi) to change his vote — and so, Amanda scraped through with three yeses. (Simon, who was blasted for his rude treatment of plus-sized contestants back in his American Idol heyday, raved that he “loved every minute” of Amanda’s audition.) Amanda explained to the judges that she’s been told all her life that she can’t be a professional dancer due her weight, so something tells me this setback will only fire her up, to prove Heidi and Howie wrong next time.

Luckily for America’s Got Talent, and for Heidi, there was a bit of redemption at the end of the night, when formerly homeless, struggling single mom Cristina Rae — a striking figure with her blond buzz-cut, floor-sweeping coat, and leopard-lady pants — earned a different sort of buzzer from Heidi.

The aesthetician, who was living in her car when she was pregnant two years ago with her adorable son Jeremiah, told the judges, “This will change our life by putting us in a home — my own home. … I want [Jeremiah] to have his own room.” But it seemed like the chance of her realizing that dream and winning the show’s life-changing $1 million grand prize was quite slim. Even though the live audience erupted over her fiery rock ‘n’ soul rendition of Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight” — a performance for which she won Amateur Night at the Apollo this past February — at first Simon was oddly unimpressed. Although he didn’t hit his red X, thankfully, when Cristina was done he asked her to sing another song, without explaining why he needed to hear more.

It was obvious from the dejected expression on Cristina’s face that she was blindsided by Simon’s request (as was the crowd, who angrily booed, just as they had when Heidi and Howie had doubted Amanda). But like a true diva, Cristina didn’t even pause for a between-songs sip of water, saying, “I’m gonna let this adrenaline take me!” And — after a cliffhanging commercial break, of course — she channeled her inner Merry Clayton and sensationally tore into the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.”

Simon’s doubts were effectively silenced right then and there. “Cristina, there is only one way to describe your voice: It is in-sane-ly good,” he marveled. “There is absolutely no point making shows like this unless we find people like you. I adore you. … I think you may be one of the best singers we’ve ever had.”

The other panelists agreed, and judging from their standing ovation, they would have surely given Cristina four yeses… but Heidi beat them to it and hit her Golden Buzzer this time, thus ensuring Cristina’s automatic advancement to this season’s live shows. As for how far Amanda can go, that remains to be seen — but hopefully Heidi will be more respectful to her during the next round, as this troubled season continues.
I don't watch this show but I've been seeing a lot more of this "fatphobia," "fat pride", "body-shaming" stuff recently than usual. Should the fat girl have received a pass just for being obese? Seems ridiculous.

Anyone actually watch this show, are there these kinds of issues often? What about "fatphobia," do you find the notion asinine or is it real?

IRHP, are you posting this because you are genuinely interested in discussion about the television show "America's Got Talent", or do you want to complain about SJWs? Because if the latter, this is not the forum for it.

Edit for clarity: you're allowed to post Takes TM about media, of course, but I do not genuinely believe this thread was made in good faith out of an interest in the source material as entertainment, because it looks like you don't even watch the show and just want something to be mad about.

I couldn't pretend to give a tin sh*t how fat someone is if they can carry a tune. The world has given passes to every tub-o-guts from Pavarotti to Elvis to Aretha to Adele for their singing ability, and these dirtbags presume to judge someone because they look different? It's music. It's a non-visual platform. Nobody judged Freddie Mercury based on him looking like a gay porn star---------they judged him based on his singing. Nobody judged Mick Jagger based on him strutting about like an effeminate rooster-------they judged him for his ability to rock the house. Elton John can put on the weirdest-ass get-up he wants, and I'll still think he's way tougher and awesomer than me, because he sang 'I'm Still Standing' and 'Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting' whilst wearing a big dumb feather boa and pink cape. Balls of solid rock. No wonder he's a knight and I'm merely an eagle.

^ There was dancing as well, not just singing, so it wasn't a non-visual routine. Honest judgement on the performance as a whole, including its presentation, is expected. It was up to the judge's subjective ruling but it seems like it's an unspoken rule that being slapped with "phobe" & "ist" is a consequence for not conforming to political correctness.

I said that I don't watch the show, that was made clear. I have nearly zero interest in it but this article was interesting enough. If you don't like the topic that's fine, you can remove it, I think I'll live, but you're coming across as biased. There's always plenty of moaning about things here but they're the "right" things.

Heidi's golden buzzer is even heavier than the girl she buzzed. I've been watching this show since the beginning, and the only sort of discrimination I have seen from any of the judges is they tend to go easy on children and old people who are "good for their age" and animals because Simon loves dogs. I would have to go back to the very early days of American Idol 20 years ago as this article mentioned if I were trying to come up with some exception to that. Simon told probably more than one person they needed to lose weight. He'd put them through, but not without criticism, though criticism has always been part of Simon's brand.

How so? Is it just because you're triggered?

Simon has directly told people that they need to lose weight? Was that from the early days of the show as well? I can't imagine that going over well more recently. Even doctors aren't exempt from criticism for telling their patients that nowadays.

Three strikes I'm out--once again, no, I do not watch it. I've seen it, but I don't follow the show. At most an interesting clip or article will happen to catch my eye.

Is it a rule that we can only discuss shows when we actively watch them...? I feel like if I had a different opinion on this incident then this topic would've went over better; or is that just my imagination?

Because people use everything as an insult. Every faucet of our being is insult fodder. "Stupid," "ugly," "[insert racial slurs here]." People are mocked for their height (short if you're male, tall if you're female), religion, financial status, literally everything. People who look down on bums aren't "poorphobic," they're just as******.

I'm not denying that a lot of society is geared toward being mean to obese people, that's certain and unfortunate, but rather that it's geared toward being mean to virtually everyone and terms ending in "phobe" aren't necessary nor even accurate.

Generally speaking if you don't watch something, you're not looking up information on it. Trying to get the thought process as to why you're suddenly talking about a show you don't watch.

But I didn't look this up, my phone just **** out news suggestions that I scroll through when I'm bored. I thought it was asinine that Heidi was called fatphobic so I made a topic about the situation, that's all.

Locked because literally nothing in this thread has anything to do with movies, television, or animation. IRHP if you really care about discussing fatphobia you're welcome to make a topic in PPR if anyone wants to engage. Next time you make a topic in movies, television, and animation, try to make it one where you actually care to discuss the contents of the media.
