100 Movies for 2020!!!
So I started watching 'The Grinch', the new one. It's free, I'm on my day off.
Couldn't make it past the thirty percent mark. What a boring pathetic piece of garbage. I'd rather watch the Jim Carrey version, and even that looks like dogcrap next to the old cartoon.

Re: 88 MOVIES FOR 2019!!!!! WHO NEEDS A LIFE LET'S WATCH MOVIES!!!!!!!!
My daughter got really into the Jim Carrey version for a while. I kinda grew to respect his commitment to the role.
Can't say much nice about the Mike Meyers Cat in the Hat movie, on the other hand.

I will say, I respect the Jim Carrey version for all the practical effects and sets. That's a labour of love, is what that is.
Still not good. Nowhere near as awful as 'Cat in the Hat' or 'The Lorax', though. Ugh. Don't even talk to me about 'The Lorax'. What an ugly, repulsive shambles that thing is.

Re: 88 MOVIES FOR 2019!!!!! WHO NEEDS A LIFE LET'S WATCH MOVIES!!!!!!!!
Don't. It's putrid.
'The Lorax' movie is so childish. It takes a fable about using the environment responsibly and instantly dumbs it down by tacking on an evil moustache-twirling villain for no reason. Then dumbs it down yet further by having a big gag-inducing happy ending. "Hooray! Defeated is the villain, and the trees are back! And the Lorax, too! Yay!" Spoon-feed it to people, instead of asking them to think. Give them a hero who fixes everything, instead of challenging them to fix it their own damn selves. 'The Lorax' is meant to be a cautionary tale, not an episode of 'Captain Planet'.
And let's not even get into the cross-promotions. Good lord. Make a movie about the environmental impact of unchecked consumerism, and then use it to sell all manner of pseudo-environmentally friendly crap. 'The Lorax would drive a Mazda and put babies in Seventh Generation diapers! You should, too, unless you're some kind of Barbaloot-hating monster!' Puke. I wonder how much Lorax merch is rotting away in landfills right now. I bet it's lots.
I can think of no better example of a movie completely missing the point. It'd be almost comical, if it weren't so disheartening.

That sounds terrible. I haven't watched any yet, and I doubt that I will until whenever Venom 2 comes out. Well, I'll probably rewatch Joker, actually, so idk.

Well, I'd certainly hope so. It is based on a children's book.

I watched 6 Underground yesterday. It's an interesting premise, and some of the action scenes are creative, though the action suffers from a lot of quick cuts. It's got Ryan Reynolds being his usual self.

If Ryan Reynolds wasn't in that movie I can confidently assert it wouldn't have kept me around for very long.

I've thought about watching that for dumb Michael Bay reasons but I'm really starting to grow tired of the whole Ryan Reynolds Thing.

I only saw one movie with him and can tell he's just budget Nicholas Cage without the madness.

Re: 100 Movies for 2020!!!
We watched Sherlock Gnome. We knew it would be bad, but we hoped it would be a bad Sherlock Holmes interpretation, and that is something I am always down for. Unfortunately, it was basically still about Gnomeo and Juliet, and Sherlock Holmes was just there sometimes, so it wasn't even really enjoyable. Merely bad.
Then we watched Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, and I am so thankful that movie exists. It is this weird decade-later closure I never thought we would get. It would have been okay if the movie was never made, but it was, and it was **** great. Gir's humor did not age into this decade but I am SO GLAD it was there all the same; it somehow magnificently managed to adapt slightly to more modern aesthetics while still being very, very unapologetically Invader Zim. Jhonen Vasquez was still like "i **** hate everyone", and I think that's valid.
It probably helped that we saw it at like 2am but I laughed my ass off the whole time. Great way to kick off the new year.

1) Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker - B
There were a couple of really dumb things in this movie--like, really REALLY dumb. But most of it was incredibly fun & cool, & I left the theater smiling & happy.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Re: 88 MOVIES FOR 2019!!!!! WHO NEEDS A LIFE LET'S WATCH MOVIES!!!!!!!!
Dr Seuss laid things out in a way that was easy for kids to understand, but he didn't dumb it down. He didn't talk down to kids or treat them like they were morons. That is the great sin of 'The Lorax' the movie--------dumbing it down. Turning the earnest environmental message into a stupid 'captain planet'-ass good-versus-evil plot, and thus making it barely applicable to the world.

Re: 100 Movies for 2020!!!
Just switch Michael Bay with Ryan Reynolds. Ryan to the front, Michael to the back. That's my opinion. Michael Bay is like the Fast and the Furious franchise.Calamity Panfan wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 12:29 pmI've thought about watching that for dumb Michael Bay reasons but I'm really starting to grow tired of the whole Ryan Reynolds Thing.

^ The Fast and the Furious franchise is actually great though?

Re: 100 Movies for 2020!!!
CATS is now the only movie that exists. I have seen it and I have jellicle chosen it as the only movie. Nothing else matters. Every other movie on the face of the planet is boring trash next to this absolute abomination. It is a masterpiece

Re: 100 Movies for 2020!!!
^ It's the most incredible thing I've ever seen. I saw it on opening night so it was still the pre-patched version with unfinished cgi where you could still see human hands and s***. it's the most horrifying thing i've witnessed in a theater and i love it
Anyway, let's start
1. Frozen II (Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee) - 1/2 - B
2. Uncut Gems (Josh Safdie & Benny Safdie) - 1/7 - A
Frozen II is perfectly fine. I think the story is probably stronger than the original but the songs definitely aren't as memorable. Also, I know it's a Disney movie and annoying sidekicks are inevitable but I want Josh Gad to go away.
Uncut Gems is a panic attack disguised as a movie. It's one of the tensest experiences I've ever had watching anything. It's a wildly casted movie that doesn't just feel like stunt casting. I'm not sure my blood pressure has gone back down since I left the theater.
