Luckily for everyone, this is the year How to Train Your Dragon 3 comes out, so if all else fails you can just watch that one 88 times.

My first movie is gonna be the Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan conclusion special. It's not quite actually a movie, but I don't care, I want to watch it, so it counts. Back soon with verdict. Prediction: perfection/10.

...haven't any to report yet. I saw 'Labyrinth' in-theatre yesterday, but that doesn't count, I've seen it loads before. Good flick, though. Is it weird that I find Jareth way more likeable for a lot of the movie than Sara? Sara is kind of an ass. She grows up a lot over the course of the movie, which is commendable, but she starts out jolly rotten, man. Hard to say she's actually any better than the supposed bad guys.

I don't remember anything about that movie except Jareth's crotch.

1. Blockers (Kay Cannon, 2018) - 1/11 - A
2. Ready Player One (Steven Spielberg, 2018) - 1/11 - C-?

Blockers honestly might be my top movie of 2018. I can't remember the last time a comedy has made me laugh this ****ing hard in a long time. John Cena and Leslie Mann are tremendous here, and all the young actresses are great. It's a nice twist on the classic teen sex comedy with a surprising amount of heart at the end. I loved it.

As for Ready Player One, I was under the influence while we watched it but I didn't have a lot of good thoughts about it from what I remember. It looked stunning though!

ok I watched the Saiki finale and I'm salty as **** because they didn't actually adapt the last 2 chapters of the manga. Like, they adapted through the first part of the ending arc, but not the actual **** ending.

6/10. the excellent bits were excellent but honestly just read the manga for the conclusion, it's way more successful as a send-off

Let's see if I can remember what all I've seen this month so far....

1) Aquaman - B+. If this movie had come out before Justice League instead of after, with the deletion of the one sentence referencing JL & no other changes, the DCEU would still be a viable project.
2) Tag - A-. The Hawkeye solo film we deserve.
3) Won't You Be My Neighbor - A. Just lovely.
4) Catch & Release - C+. If this had been just a dramedy instead of a rom-com, or if the love-interest character had been better-written, or if the friend-in-unrequited-love-with-the-protagonist subplot would've been dropped, this would've been a much better movie.
5) Moana - A-
6) Finding Dory - B+

1. Dragon Ball Super: Broly - A

It's the only movie since Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection of F that I've actually went to see in theater because I actually wanted to, I have only seen a couple between them anyway.

It was pretty much worth the long wait since its announcement, but I have nitpicks. Still, it was really fun to watch and I'm glad we are probably getting the anime back now. It was surprisingly well-written for a DB film, they've set the bar fairly high.

1. 'Into the Spider-Verse' - 1/26/2019 - 10/10

What a roaring good time, man. One of the best superhero movies I've ever seen.

7) Definitely Maybe - B. Actually kinda cute.
8) The Mummy (1999) - A-. Some of the CGI actually still kinda works.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

My roommate was watching BIg Lebowski and I've always been on the "this movie's overrated" bandwagon but on this rewatch I really found myself enjoying it more than ever. Maybe I just appreciate the Coens more in general since my last viewing.

Other three are 2018 catchup. First Reformed features a great script from Schrader and an absolutely phenomenal turn from Ethan Hawke (baffling how he wasn't nominated for Best Actor). The movie's not going to be for everyone (especially the last ~20 minutes or so) but I personally loved the way the character's crisis of faith was handled.

Minding the Gap seems like a documentary about skateboarding and friendship but it's so much more. It's about masculinity, abuse, growing up, race, class and a million other things. It's beautiful and charming and heartbreaking. And there's skateboarding. Some really f***ing fabulously shot skateboarding

The Commuter is standard "Liam Neeson gets thrown in a ridiculous situation and has to save his family." There's silly twists and dumb fun and I liked it a lot.

1. Into the Spider-Verse was amazing. The art is on another level. Really enjoyed all the Spider-folk, Miles' family, and Octavius.

I took my daughter to see it. She likes to "play Spider-Man" now, which is just us running through lines of the movie. She most seems to like me quoting Spider-Ham. Cracks her up.

Man. What a joy to see a superhero movie where the superhero actually enjoys being a superhero. I'm about tired of new emo Superman and whiny Anakin and crybaby Parzival, man. More silly goofball wisecracking Spider-Man, please and thank you.

You can fly, Superman! You wanna maybe make some lemonade out of this? C'mon, homey. Parzival, you basically own the world----------try your hand at Rod McBanning this biz. And Anakin...

...go to hell. You suck, Anakin. You miserable little ratfink stinko, you. Ugh.

Gets his own lightsabre, gets to levitate stuff at will, gets to hook it up with '02 Natalie Portman, and still turns evil. What an ungrateful mean-spirited slimy little pup. I could puke coat-hangers.

Finally finished Buster Scruggs and it's fantastic. Some of the vignettes might be a little long when taken as a whole but individually each one is fantastic. Coens tackling different western stories is fun.

Annihilation is one I wanted to see for a while and it was worth the wait. Really fantastic, creepy atmosphere here. Special effects were phenomenal. Just an awesome sci-fi horror movie.

You Were Never Really Here was kind of disappointing. I heard great things, and I enjoyed watching it, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed. Felt like a pretty standard "artsy" action-thriller. Ramsay''s direction, Phoenix's performance and Greenwood's score are all fantastic, but the overall package didn't impress me too much more than the standard post-Drive violent thriller.

Eighth Grade is a masterpiece. Last year Lady Bird perfectly encapsulated teenage awkwardness and the transition between high school and college. This year, Bo Burnham did that same thing with middle school awkwardness transitioning into high school. Elsie Fisher gives one of the best child actor performances I've ever seen, and Burnham's script nails teenage dialogue perfectly. Absolutely fantastic film.

Of the two Fyre Festival documentaries, I slightly preferred Fyre Fraud (the Hulu one). Both have their issues which the filmmakers have called each other out on (the Hulu doc paid con artist Billy McFarland to participate;the Netflix doc is produced by a company that did advertising for Fyre Fest and thus seems like a bit of a PR stunt). I prefer Fyre Fraud because even though they might have paid McFarland, they dig into him during his interview and the doc as a whole. The other doc has some highly entertaining parts, but seems to let some of the other peripheral people off the hook more.

9) Glass - B+. The twist darn near ruins the whole movie. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

2. 'Seder-Masochism' - 2/8/2019 - 10/10

Another animated flick from the megatalent Nina Paley (of 'Sita Sings the Blues' fame). This being her take on the Book of Exodus, the seder meal itself sort of bookending it.

The animation is beautiful and stylised, and just in general the work is fun. Some truly trippy bits, man. Highly recommended.

Watched the Netflix Fyre documentary yesterday. Pretty entertaining in its presentation, and the material was fascinating stuff. Amazing that any of that stuff was allowed to happen.

Has anyone watched both the Netflix and Hulu ones? Is it worth checking out the other?
