2018 Oscars

Nominations for this year released today

Takeaways:
- I'm happy that Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig both got Best Director nominations for Get Out and Lady Bird. Those were the two best movies of the year in my opinion and I had doubts about them getting nominations in that category
- On that note I noticed McDonaugh and Three Billboards didn't get a nomination there, which could affect its Best Picture push. Though I'm pretty sure Affleck didn't get nominated for Best Director when Argo won Best Picture so there's still a chance.
- It's interesting how Best Picture doesn't always fill 10 nominations. Like they could've easily thrown The Florida Project or I, Tonya or something in there but didn't. That's always weird to me.
- Happy to see The Big Sick get a screenplay nomination. Would've liked to see Romano or Hunt get a Supporting Actor/Actress nomination but those were long shots.
- Logan getting a screenplay nomination is cool too
- Oscar Nominated Film The Boss Baby
- GIVE SUFJAN AN OSCAR
- I haven't seen any of the other cinematography nominees but I'll still riot if Blade Runner 2049 doesn't win. Same goes for basically any effects Oscar.

Of the major nominees I've only really seen: Get Out and Lady Bird (my top two movies of the year)
Of the major nominees I'd still like to see: Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, Phantom Thread, I Tonya, The Florida Project
Of the major nominees I have no interest in seeing: Darkest Hour, The Post, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards

I'd love for Boss Baby to win, but only because it means Disney doesn't instantly get the award for just being there.

And only that.

^What about Ferdinand?

I've seen:
Dunkirk (Picture, Director, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Score)
Get Out (Picture, Lead Actor, Director, Original Screenplay)
Logan (Adapted Screenplay)
The Big Sick (Original Screenplay)
The Last Jedi (Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects)
Beauty and the Beast (Production Design, Costume Design)
Guardians vol. 2 (Visual Effects)

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I haven't seen any of the animated nominees but from what I've heard Coco is stronger than quite a few Disney/Pixar movies that have gotten awards from the Academy while Boss Baby and Ferdinand were merely okay. Dunno about the other two. But if stuff like the HttYD movies, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Kubo, etc. haven't been able to dethrone the Disney beast that has only lost once in the past decade (in a year they weren't nominated), I doubt these are the movies to do it.

i mean the academy didn't even give the award to the right disney movie last year

My favorite actress finally has an Oscar nomination! And it's for... Best Director. Kind of ironic, no?

All I know is that if she wins, I want to see a reenactment of this scene from Frances Ha, Oscar in hand:

Coco is the first Disney/Pixar film to come out in years that would actually deserve the Oscar imo. Too bad that if ((when)) it does win that won't mean **** anymore because they just get it every year regardless of whether or not anything better came out, or whether or not what they made in a certain year was garbo.

I just saw The Post. Pretty good standard Spielberg fare.

very boring show. no real surprises. Maybe it's because I've still only really seen Lady Bird and Get Out still, and those won a grand total of one award so wasn't much there. Disappointed Greenwood lost Best Original Score and Sufjan lost Best Original Song. I have no take on Shape of Water winning.

Giving an award to Kobe f***ing Bryant during the first post-#MeToo Oscars ceremony sure is something, though.

The only movie I saw last year took the 2 awards it deserved, so I'm satisfied.

Glad Coco won but the point still stands that given the past years' context it unfortunately means absolutely nothing.

Speaking of Coco, with the win for "Remember Me" (which was a beautiful performance that made me tear up even not knowing the context of the film), Robert Lopez is the first DOUBLE EGOT WINNER.

He's won two Emmys for his work on The Wonder Pets, three Grammys (Avenue Q, Frozen as a whole, and "Let It Go,"), two Oscars ("Let It Go," "Remember Me") and three Tonys (one for Avenue Q and two for {i]The Book of Mormon[/i])

What the hell? They didn't put Adam West in the In Memoriam.

...will I sound like a total moran if I ask why Gary Oldman's win was controversial?

I mean, I didn't see all the Oscar-nominated flicks, but Gary Oldman did pretty dang good in 'Darkest Hour'. He sold it, man. Like, I couldn't have told it was him. He was solid as a rock. And so what's the deal?

I wasn't aware of any controversy. My friends on FB said he did a good job too.
