Have you ever wondered what it'd be like to be an extra in a movie?
What would get you to agree to being an extra in a movie?
Lights, camera, action! Are you ready to have your fifteen minutes of fame? Ok—I may be using the term fame very loosely, but being a movie extra will at least give you a taste of what being on a film set is like. Plus, every background acting job will be different and can transport you into a different world for a day, or two. Perhaps you’ll find yourself as a zombie in a post-apocalyptic paradise somewhere, or to the busy Christmas streets in a cute downtown. Sounds fun, right? Here’s a guide for exactly how to be an extra in a movie.

what to expect...
So you finally got yourself cast as an extra, now what can you expect? Here’s a typical day on set:

Call Time/Check-in. You’ll be given a call time to arrive and you’ll check-in with a casting representative once you get there (bring an id!). They will give you further instructions.
Hair, Makeup & Costume: If your background part requires any sort of cosmetology or special attire you will be sent in line for costuming, and then hair and makeup.
Wait. You better perfect the art of patience, because this line of work requires a lot of waiting…and then some more waiting. The waiting is the worst part so bring your smartphone that’s fully charged. Bring an extra battery too, because most likely there won’t be any outlets nearby. The Anker Portable battery backup is amazing (it’s the one I use)!
Meals. There is usually a meal break which is provided by Craft Services. Most of the time it’s a simple buffet with a selection of non-alcoholic drinks. Some snacks and drinks could also be provided in the waiting area.
Show Time. They will call you when they are ready for the scene that involves your group. You’ll be put into place on the set and given any special instructions. The director will call “action!” and you will start to do whatever they have asked you to until you hear the director yell “cut”. This could happen dozens of times for one scene.
That’s a Wrap. 10+ hours later they’ll call it a wrap, either for the day or for the entire movie.
Check-out. You’ll need to check out with a casting representative to prove that you’ve been there through the entire scene. Plus, if you had a costume (lucky you!) you will need to return it. If the scene wasn’t finished or you were hired for multiple days, you’ll get a call time for your next scene prior to leaving.

I've been an extra, & so has my brother.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
