"The US egg industry kills 350 million chicks a year. New technology offers an alternative" (article)
Every year the U.S. egg industry kills about 350 million male chicks because they will never lay eggs and so have little monetary value.

Supposedly rooster meat is really good. Why not just use them for that?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Well, you have to balance it against the cost of feeding and upkeep until they're ready to be eaten, and well, I'm certainly no chicken expert, but I'd think their moodiness and territorial nature would make it a pain in the neck to try and raise roosters commercially. Like, the whole reason cockfighting exists is because roosters don't need any prodding to fight each other---------a farm full of roosters sounds about as peaceful as the Royal Rumble. And even after all that trouble, there's not even any eggs as a side-bennie.

That makes sense. Can't they still at least use the male chicks for dog food or something though? Seems like an awful waste...

Article says the male eggs get 'ground up for other use', so it doesn't sound like they just go to waste.
