Guide to growing.

Quite a few people have mentioned problems with growing fruit trees, so here are a few basic tips that will make it much easier.
Plant on the grass, avoid dirt patches because trees of have 25% of the normal chance to grow if you plant them there.
Don't plant in the shade. The tree will die. The biggest things to avoid are the cliffs on your town's edges.
Fruit trees grow better if planted in groups of 3 or more of the same kind.
Some people have said that trampling a sapling will kill it. I haven't seen anything to indicate this is true, but you might want to avoid it anyway.
Don't plant too close to buildings or anywhere near the random signs through out your village. The signs show where a new animal's house might go. Even if the tree grows it will never fully develop and stop growing at the middle stage.
Don't plant while it's raining. The tree will die.
Fail proof way to grow a tree! If you cut down an existing tree, dig up the stump and plant your fruit in the stump's hole the fruit tree will grow every time, even if it's raining.
The only possible exception are coconut trees, which don't like being planted anywhere but the coast, close to the water, and only during the summer. If you are very lucky they might grow in the fall or spring.
