What are your all-time favorite RPGs? What makes them special to you?
My list could go on and on. I'll touch on the details a little later.

EarthBound
Chrono Trigger
Tales of Symphonia
FF6
DW3
Super Mario RPG
Skies of Arcadia
Secret of Mana
FFT:A
Paper Mario

Just a list off the top of my head.

Final Fantasy - cause its a classic
Chrono Trigger- errr, because?
Earthbound - the dialouge in this game is hilarious
Final Fantasy 7 - cause Cait Sith RULES
Super Mario RPG - cause Geno RULES
LOTR: The third age - errr, nevermind
Golden Sun - the entire game responses consisted of Yes and No. I always thought that was funny.

The Zelda games are NOT RPGs! Neither is Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem etc. Those are Strategy games. Zelda is Adventure.
But anyways, my favorites are:

Skies of Arcadia: Legends Probably the best of them. I loved the game and the setting and all of the characters and such. I'm writing a story in the Fan Fiction forum set after the game. Go there now! Or...at least when you're done reading this.

Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga Great dialogue and interesting field and battle systems. I just wish it were longer...

Super Mario RPG The battle system is probably the best part here. Although most of the music is annoying...

Paper Mario This one had SO many sidequests, it's not even funny. It has almost as many as Arcadia does. What I don't like, though, is the shallow-as-the-kiddie-pool battle system.

Breath of Fire II I liked how you could build your own town in this game, recruit tenants and shopkeepers, and even get it to fly! I also liked how there were 9 different party members you can organize. A problem about the town, though, is that you can only invite one person per house.

Final Fantasy Adventure The only Final Fantasy game thus far I stuck with long enough to beat. Sword of Mana on the GBA is basically a remake of it with different layouts and a slightly changed plotline. A lot of the music from the original is in it too.

Earthbound The most underrated RPG of all time. It's surprisingly challenging, is quite long, has lots of funny moments, and gets really good at the very end.

Mega Man Battle Network (series) Getting tired of the medival settings in RPGs, this was a great change. I love cyberpunk, so I took a liking to this setting. The battle system is the most unique and interesting from the games listed above. MMBN1 was a good way to start, 2 was even better, 3 has the best storyline, and 4 was a bit of a letdown from the last 2, but still decent.

The Battle Network games are NOT RPGs! Neither are Paper Mario, Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi, etc. Those are Platformer games. Battle Network games are action games.

Well, I consider them to be RPGs with action/platformer aspects.

What the heck are you talking about?? Paper Mario and SMRPG are both RPGS and contain all the elements that classify it as an RPG. i.e. platformer games you fight the enemy simultaniously and it involves jumping platforms. In Paper Mario you fight the enemy in a series of timed turns by running into the enemy. Same with SMRPG.

As for Battle Network, its not an "action game." its just an inovative way of battling in an RPG.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem are both RPGS and contain all the elements that classify it as an RPG. i.e. in strategy games you fight the enemy using well-defined and narrow abilities. In Final Fantasy Tactics you fight the enemy in a series of skill and weapon based attacks. Same with FE.

As for Zelda, its not an "adventure game." its just an inovative way of navigating in an RPG.

Fire Emblem and FFTactics (or those Disgaea-series games that don't remember the offical name for) are RPGs, just not the standard type. They're strategy RPGs.

I consider Zelda an rpg by my standards, so there. I don't care if you don't think that, but it's MY opinion. Yet no complaints about Quest 64, lol!

Zelda is an action adventure role playing game. It is also an RPG. You're thinking final-fantasy/turnbased, Cysma. Not everyone has to play by the same rules. The genre doesn't just depend on the fighting engine. And being an obsessive purest is boring.

Reasons!

EarthBound: Easily one of the funniest games I've ever played. Quirky, off the wall, but also fairly deep at times. It really shows the world in a different light.

Chrono Trigger: Time Travel, Adventure, Great Graphics for the time. Cool story, fun battle engine.

Tales of Symphonia: Great real time battles! A story that twists and turns. Really well developed characters. And despite what some people might argue, some of the best voice acting I've ever seen in a game.

FF6: What can I say? It's a true classic. More characters than you can shake a stick at. Huge story. One of the most flexible and customizable battle systems of it's kind. If you let yourself, by the end of the game there should be at least a few characters that you can really identify with.

DW3: I played the gameboy version, but it really shined. Old school charm. I loved building my own characters. It actually has a few plot twists, which is unusual for when it was made. Fairly nonlinear too. And as an added bonus, the personality test frightened my friends and family.

Super Mario RPG: Perfect. Mario in an RPG. Cool, funny, characters, unusual enemies, and a laugh a minute. It did Mario first, and in my opinion, best.

Skies of Arcadia: Wonderfully whimsical. More lighthearted than most games these days, which I found refreshing. It revisits more than a few old cliches but somehow manages to make them feel fresh. All around, solid.

Secret of Mana: Who says an RPG needs to be turn based? A decent story, terrific gameplay (especially 2 or 3 players) and a unique style for graphics and the soundtrack that I've never even seen of heard anything else close to to this day.

FFT:A: Yeah, okay, so this is technically a strategy game. Light hearted on the surface, but a strong message if you look. Again, a whimsical fantasy world with tons of character. Just lots of fun to play.

Paper Mario: A great style that really suits the world of Mario. Simple but fun. It loved how they reinvented the creatures from older games, and the new ones fit in well too. All of Mario's partners can be described in one word. Personality.

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy IV, Super Mario RPG - Nothing to say on these, because everyone knows what they're like.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga - Sheer excellence. A perfect blend of RPG and platforming, plus Luigi in his first non-NPC RPG role!

Phantasy Star IV - My favorite Genesis game hands down. It also had combination attacks before Chrono Trigger.

Pokemon Ruby - I don't care how many people crap their pants over Gold and Silver; this is my favorite Pokemon.

Sweet Home - I'm still amazed at how advanced this is for an RPG (albeit only in Japan because of how friggin' gory it is) released in 1989.

There's other stuff I'd list, but won't for "That's not an RPG!" argument reasons.
