Odd. I found that game quite amusing, despite its complete lack of epic storyline. And the "create-a-world" system would have been amazing had Square pulled it off the way it should have been pulled off(i.e. much more effort, more liberty to create, etc).Originally posted by Thowachairatmi:
^No, I knew that's what he meant. He put Secret of Mana on his list of "Worst games of all time" like 3 or 4 times!
But the REAL ****ty Mana game is Legend of Mana.
Death to legend of mana
Death to legend of mana
Death to legend of mana
Death to legend of mana
Death to legend of mana
Maybe games should be rated on what they are as opposed to what you wanted them to be. =P

Create-a-world: Good concept, I will admit.
Story: Snoozer. SoM and Sd3's plots were MUCH more deep than this. Heck, even FFA/Sword of Mana's plot was deeper.
Graphics: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much like a children's storybook a 6-year old drew! Often irritating colours. Some backgrounds look okay though.
Niccolo: KILL IT! KILL THE DEMON!!
Battle System: I will admit it's one thing done right-It never really gets old.
The best parts were when Bud and Lisa tried to take over the world with Pumpkins and the description for the Chocobo. (Not the Chocobo you think) Also, I like Bud and Lisa.
And yes I rate it for what it is-A bad game with a few things done right. And I WANT it to be a good game like the other Mana games are.

Legend of Mana was a good game. Like Chrystal Chronicles, it's given a horrible rep because its part of a series which, ironically, is based on hardly any direct continuity while retaining an "amazing" storyline in each game. Naturally, merely because its broadcasted with the same brand logo, it has to be just like all previous games? That's stupid.
Legend of Mana was different. It featured the same themes as the Mana series, but around a completely different game. It is just like CC in that aspect. The game was not based on any one storyline, or even a main character, but three other storylines focusing on the secondary characters(Elazul and the Jumi, Larc and the Dragoons, etc.). Your "main character" was just you. The storyline -- if it an be called such -- is based more on exploring, discovery, and originality than anything else. =P
The graphics were beautiful -- kiddy as well, but don't tell me the rest of the series wasn't ****ing kiddy. =P They just couldn't use the beautiful "water-paint" effect on the backgrounds. The Mana series has always been a fairy-tale like setting, and LoM does not fail in that using the CHildren's Book approach. Yoshi's Island did the same thing. Was it a bad game? Hell no. And the spell graphics alone were good enough to overlok whatever discrepancies you had with the backgrounds. =P
The music was some of the best -- yet again, Squaresofts treats us in this department. I had that action-paced cavern theme ingrained into my brain for a month before I got over it.
The gameplay and fun factor were awesome as well. Hell, you could even pair up with two players and "whack" monsters like you did on the SNES(damn Playstations and their lack of multiple controller ports...)!
The bad points were really how short the game was, how easy, and how poorly designed the create-a-world system was. SHort but sweet, anyway. I still consider LoM a classic. I'm buying it whenever I can find the blasted thing, anyway.
People need to stop comparing games like LoM and CC to what came before them -- the Final Fantasies and Secret of Manas -- and playing them for, as I said, what they are, and not what the other games were.
And Square needs to stop being an ass and slapping FF on every game they make.

While I did see the characterization, quite a bit of them failed to make me grow attatched to them.Legend of Mana was different. DID I SAY IT WAS CRAPPY BECAUSE IT LOOKED KIDDY? Most of the characters look like they were drawn by a 6-year-old! And did Yoshi's Island have Mutant-looking characters? Hell no. (Because Yosihes are adorable) While after looking back at the game, I will take back what I said about the backgrounds looking "Somewhat good" and replace it with "Beautiful". But some the character designs looked like a 6-year old drew them! And for Niccolo...KILL HIM KILL HIM!!!The graphics were beautiful -- kiddy as well, but don't tell me the rest of the series wasn't ****ing kiddy. =P They just couldn't use the beautiful "water-paint" effect on the backgrounds. The music was some of the best? Care to explain? The megaboss theme (Irwin on Reflection I think?) was the best one in the game. Everything else wasn't really too impressive. The music was some of the best -- yet again, Squaresofts treats us in this department. Yep. The battles never get boring-That's the overall high-point of the game besides the Chocobo and Bud and Lisa. The gameplay and fun factor were awesome as well. Hell, you could even pair up with two players and "whack" monsters like you did on the SNES(damn Playstations and their lack of multiple controller ports...)!
Duh.The bad points were really how short the game was, how easy, and how poorly designed the create-a-world system was. SHort but sweet, anyway. I still consider LoM a classic. I'm buying it whenever I can find the blasted thing, anyway.
And if you seriously think I'm comparing Legend of Mana to Seiken Denetsu 3, then you must stab yourself in the eye with Lisa's Broom. I played this game LONG before I even HEARD of Seiken Denetsu 3. While the battles were pretty fun, the piss-poor plot, alot of Character models that looked pretty mutated, the world-design system executed TERRIBLY bugged me alot. I WILL admit that it isn't bad-It's just a bit below average in my book (I use a system where 5 is average) and it could have been SO much better-I mean, that battle system's one of the best yet. And Multiplayer rules. And you know that it's hard to find RPGs you can play with a friend these days.People need to stop comparing games like LoM and CC to what came before them -- the Final Fantasies and Secret of Manas -- and playing them for, as I said, what they are, and not what the other games were.
Agreed. They REALLY shouldn't have done that with Crystal Chronicles-And if you say that they should have slapped the "Mana" name on THAT because of how it looks, then you must smack yourself with Bud's frying pan. (Bud and Lisa are the only characters besides the Chocobo that I actually grew attatched too)And Square needs to stop being an ass and slapping FF on every game they make.
And that's not the first time they did that-They had, unfortunatley, did that with Final Fantasy Legend. That meant that people would be exposed to its toxin. And I think They should have kept the Mana title on Final Fantasy Adventure.

For the record, I was taregting you with that statement. And for the sake of argument...And when have I said "oh tis gam sux becaus its not liek seiken denetsu 3!111111111(TOO MANY ONES!! AAAAA!!!!)1111111!!`~~~~~```111111
Not that I like to nitpick, or anything. And yes I rate it for what it is-A bad game with a few things done right. And I WANT it to be a good game like the other Mana games are.
In all frankness, I think Larc, Elazul and Pearl, and Escad maanged to stand out, but I'm not debating that point because it's right. What can't be argued is that there was a crate full of interesting characters in the game, though, and interesting side-stories to go with 'em('member that dude who was trying to bring the stars themselves down from the skies to burn the world? Melchior? What was his name?).While I did see the characterization, quite a bit of them failed to make me grow attatched to them.
I never accused you of saying such, and in LoM's defense... have you even seen how a six year old draws? The world/setting seemed based more on a six-year old's imagination than his penmanship. Also, the weird-ass characters -- (i.e. that talking tea kettle, prophet with the grape-hair, and Melchior(or whatever), who ressembled somekind of half-human-half-goat-half-demon-half-statue, etc.) -- I found rather interesting. People keep whining about a breath of fresh air from the cliched RPGs... well jesus, people. Look at LoM. IT HAS A WALKING TALKING TEA KETTLE MAN FOR CHRIST SAKE! =]DID I SAY IT WAS CRAPPY BECAUSE IT LOOKED KIDDY? Most of the characters look like they were drawn by a 6-year-old! And did Yoshi's Island have Mutant-looking characters? Hell no. (Because Yosihes are adorable) While after looking back at the game, I will take back what I said about the backgrounds looking "Somewhat good" and replace it with "Beautiful". ...And why the hell do you hate Niccolo so much? He's like... in every game. Except this one had a larger personality.
'Course, nobody beats Neko.
Ask Beethoven to explain himself and see what you get. =] Seriously, this is probably more an opinionated subject matter. For me, I found nearly every song in this game catchy, and perfect for the setting(if there were any bad ones, they don't stick out in my memory). To elaborate -- take a look at the "Luna" theme(I can't really remember all of the original titles), Domina, that band song, or one of my favorites, "The Wind Sings of a Journey". I loved most of 'em to death, and in my mind, a game with amazing music makes that game a helluva lot more fun to play. The music was some of the best? Care to explain? The megaboss theme (Irwin on Reflection I think?) was the best one in the game. Everything else wasn't really too impressive.
The other points we agree on, as I can see. Specifically, LoM was an unfinished game. It's like square was picking at a diamond, and just said "To hell with it", dragging it out half mined. This game could have been so much more, its almost sad to see. And yes, Final Fantasy Legends and Final Fantasy Adventure. Stupid fools at Square. At least they released FFA as "Sword of Mana" for the GBA. At least I think it's a re-release... it seemed kind of different to me... remake?

It was unfinished? That may explain its shortness. (That means shortest time possible to have as much fun possible with the battle system!)
I said quite a bit of them failed to get me attatched too them-The guy who was going to bring the skies down to burn the world was funny (And he was one of the few characters I grew attatched too), but Bud and Lisa trying to take over the world with PUMPKINS was an instant classic. ^_^
In addition to looking as ugly as hell, Niccolo's character was simply annoying. I HAD SO WANTED TO SIC THE LAND DRAGON ON HIM!
Neko I actually liked-He was cute!
And Erdawn, let's just agree to disagree about Legend of Mana before we start fighting about it the way people fight over Chrono Cross. (No offense)
